Is it possible to get insurance against having to cancel flights?

I live in Australia and am on a 457 visa which is not the most stable visa in the world. Basically if I ever lost my job then my visa would expire within 4 weeks. This sort of uncertainty makes planning trips in advance a bit nervy. For example I want to arrange a trip home for Christmas and to get any sort of good deal (will still be around 2.5k to 3k AUD) I will need to book about 8 months in advance. Likewise I want to go to Moscow in August for World Athletics Champs which with visas and everything would need to be planned well in advance.

So to put my mind at ease I want to find an insurance company who provides cover for being unable to use flights previously booked? Does such a thing exist or is it wishful thinking on my part.

It is just astonishingly worrying paying out 3K for flights that you are not certain you will ever get to use, due to a very unstable visa.

    All advice much appreciated.

    Thanks

Travel insurance typically will only cover you if you cannot make a trip because of sudden illness or family bereavement or where the airline cancels the flight and you're at the loss of hotels etc. that you've paid for in advance.

I don't believe you can insure to cover the events you've described.

the only way is to buy a more expensive flight (e.g. flexible flight) that gives you the option to change dates and / or cancel it with some refund.
or also - you could buy a flight and pay to change dates if necessary (not possible on all flights) but if the date you change to is more expensive you will have to pay the difference. as you're booking so far in advance the flight will be more expensive nearer the time.
