    Hi

I'm looking to start a yoga class (recommended by my gynae) I am from the Naas area so would prefer something close-by. I have alot of bladder, bowel and pelvic floor issues so really need and instructor that knows what they're doing. Can anyone recommend a yoga instructor in the naas area as i have never done it before and having a recommendation would really help as do not want to flare up any of my problems. Cheers :)

I know they do Yoga classes in Citywest gym and I'm fairly sure they're pay as you go, if you drive then that's quite close.

Have you checked the gym in Monread (assuming it's still there)? Also, is there a gym in the Osprey Hotel or what about the one in the Kilashee Hotel?

    Hi

Yeah i think they do classes in all those places, but was really looking for a recommendation from someone, as a friend of mine says that yoga instructors can vary enormously and with my health issues am just being over-cautious. But thanks for the info, maybe will make a couple of calls.

Are your problems post childbirth, have you been to physio? I know my physio in Milltown ran pilates classes too. I don't think going to a general gym yoga class would be the right move. My friend is a yoga teacher I will see if she know anyone in the Naas area, or what in geenral she'd recommend.

    Hi

No, problems are not post-childbirth. I do alot of running and started to experience some urine leaking and was referred to physio as was thought that i had loose pelvic floor. However on examination it seemed my pelvic floor was too tight, i.e could not release properly. Continued to go for physio to try and release but it flared up some bowel and bladder problems, so they stopped and recommended gentle yoga to a) try to learn to release and then b) to learn to tighten the pelvic floor to stop the leaking. Was then referred to gynae who didn't seem overly concerned with lack of release but confirmed that he thought pelvic floor was damaged at the front area where it's needed for bladder control. They said under normal circumstances they would insert a sling to support the pelvic floor but because of an chronic bladder condition they would be reluctant to perform this op as they did not know how it would effect the bladder. He also recommended gentle yoga to relax and then strengthen the pelvic floor. But like the physio they recommended that i only go to a very knowledgeable yoga instructor given my bladder/bowel history. Apologies for long response, just wanted to give you a clearer picture of the history. If you could talk to your yoga friend that'd be great, much appreciated.

IMO Pilates is actually better for internal muscles like pelvic floor etc. obviously your health professional knows best but I find it is more targeted to these areas. Whereas I find yoga better for the larger muscles strength and also relaxation.
Would be good for you to chat to an instructor that teaches both methods as I'm sure they would give you an unbiased opinion on what would be most suitable.

Am a pilates virgin so stupid question - what is "IMO" pilates. My physio recommended yoga as she said that pilates is more aimed at tightening the pelvic floor which i want to avoid. It's more learning to relax first, then strengthen. But to be honest i know very little about either so all advice is appreciated. Maybe IMO pilates is different?

IMO just means "In my opinion " not a type of Pilates :)
