Time to get rocking with our second event of the year, a trip to Thurles Golf Club on the 23rd March. Tee Times from 10:30am.

    All info and chat here.

Prizes from Esker Hills shall be given out after the round as well.

Price for the round is again €30 for Society members and €35 for visitors.

P.S. Remember, anyone who didn't pay the membership in Esker Hills must do so in Thurles.
Also, after our committee meeting in Esker Hills, there have been a few revisions regarding the non-members playing with the society - have a look at the thread when you get a chance

Snap, I just hope nothing comes up cause I really want to get out playing as much golf as possible this year.

I'll be heading from Castleknock if anyone fancies a car pool?

But there's a nagging feeling in the back of my mind....

In the same boat as a number of the lads here. Its the only date as far as I know that clashes with my home society. Its their first outing of the year, and as returning GOY, I can't really duck out of it.

Looks like April will be the target for me too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

Is there a schedule for actual dates for the outings over the year? I'll like to see if an make a few outings before joining?

    Thanks!

Thanks, anything on Venues though. Haven't the dates is of limited use if the venue is the other end of the country for me. Surely there must be some knowledge or intention of where to go to for the outing each month???

Looks like that day is very popular for society outings. My GAA club society has its first outing of the year that day too. Can't miss it seeing as I am captain this year.

    Looking forward to Portarlington though.

Quick question guys, whats the story with bringing a guest or two along to outings? Was half tempted to say it to my regular playing partners to come along. I mentioned it to them about joining up thru signing up to boards, but they're not the biggest d'interweb users.

Hoping to make the next outing to Thurles, I didn't get to play on any of the society outings last year because of injury and looking forward to getting out again( played on the inaugural outing to Dundrum nearly two years ago!) I have kept a close eye on all the golf events and seems to be going from strength to strength. Well done to all concerned for the hard work and organisation.

I'd get them to log in a stick up a few posts, its not that hard and they might even like joining in the banter here.

To play more than one outing your better off becoming a member anyway. Visitors are restricted to prizes they can win as well.

Yes I know that and the society will never turn anyone away but we are trying to create and maintain a society, not to create casual events.

Why can't the guys who are not on boards join the society if they so wish?
I have been a few societies down through the years who had "outsiders" allowed as members with no problems...

I play the odd time with a mates society, but I am not allowed to join it cause its restricted to players from a certain area and GAA members.

Each society has their rules and regulations and they stick to them. If we want to move ours forward we will have to stick to ours or we're back to just organising days out.

... Boards Golf Society...for people on Boards..IMO that is how it should be. If poeple from outside boards start joining then I think it loses it's whole purpose. How hard is it to register and post a message or two anyway if people want to join that badly?

Probably wont make this one unfortunately.

Originally thought I may have to miss it as it's my girlfriend's birthday that day but managed to talk her around. However, on Tuesday I dislocated my shoulder for the umpteenth time (fairly sure I have hit double figures by now) so looks like a spell on the sidelines is on the cards.

Unlucky Link, fixed that for you btw.
Why couldn't it have happened before seeking the planning permission. Such a balls all around. Good luck with the recovery

He might be driving but you'll be the one with the handbrake on!!!
Time for an ESR reduction for you if you continue to come in with silly scores like something in the high 30's :D (all relative when it comes to boards outings)

I would just like to question the wording .. golf society?

    why not club/group/gang

are you simply trying to sound well to do... or is this just golfing lingo

I mean obviously the word society is not accurate

first post in the golf forum and you are questioning our outings???

i was just a group / gang of golfers then you would be turning up at any course and playing.

Our events are organised and planned to meet the needs of all its members. A golf club is the person(s) who run the courses we play on.

and why is the word society not accurate??

I am not here to run through where and when you should use certain words for your education

    THIS....

Makes absolutely no sense .. you are a group of people who organise and attend golfing events...are you not. Surely the only reason for not using golfing group is because your founders view the sport as posh.
    .

EDIT; and no I am not questioning your outings simply curious about the groups name.

Hello Rustedcore. Interesting question, and something that I have never been asked before in my life.

The answer is very simple. Its traditional. The word "society" (in golfing terms anyway) is used to describe any relatively cohesive "group" of golfers.

    Here is the Wiki answer:

A society, or a human society, is a group of people related to each other through persistent relations, or a large social grouping sharing the same geographical or virtual territory, subject to the same political authority and dominant cultural expectations. Human societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent members. In the social sciences, a larger society often evinces stratification and/or dominance patterns in subgroups.
Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would not otherwise be possible on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap.
A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology.

Now, you may question whether we, as a group of individuals who mainly interact via the various threads on this forum, are "related" to each other in the way defined above, or whether we actually benefit from being in such a group, but I would wholeheartedly assert that the Boards.ie Golf Society, as defined not just in the above case, but in the common meaning and understanding of the term, is the correct and appropriate title.

Believe me, it has absolutely nothing to do with being posh. In fact, some of our members aren't posh at all. Not even in the slightest - mightn't even have been on a boat at all, ever...

Keep posting in here and you might find yourself interested in joining in. This society is most welcoming and the craic can be mighty!!
