I have a very strange and specialised skill set - not being smart, but there are probably about ten people in Ireland I know that could do it....saw my perfect job advertised, and applied....I know it was a good application - the form itself was ten pages, and took me a good four hours to apply. I got an email Friday to say they were shortlisting and would call today - no call. I got four people (who could have done the role - two applied as well) to read my application. And I read theirs. We all should have got first round interviews at least. This is a Government Agency. None of us got calls. It's a 100k+ a year job, but very very specialised.

Didn't want to call as it looks needy/desperate! Advice?

There could be a particular evaluation criteria that you have not met. Did you check them all carefully?

This happened to a friend of mine.
As it's public sector they often send feedback rating your score against other applicants, so that should give you info.

And outside the country? If it so difficult to find people with your skill level, then it is possible they have widened their search to include the whole of the EU, which they are entitled to do...

    contact them and ask ....

Chances are the role was filled by a relative/friend or someone in the office (who may or may not have the skills)

We don't call them murders. We call them PCR's [Permanent Conflict Resolutions].

It's sewerage regulation (I know!) - in NI and they specifically asked for an ROI person, with experience in energy and telecoms - which all of us have....just think it's strange none of us heard back!

That's your problem, I'd say anyone here who has ever worked for eircom applied for the post. They qualify on the telecoms front & they energetically spew a load of shìtè, so you prob never had a chance OP

Such a job advertisement would be illegal, so perhaps that is the reason!!! If they were to appoint someone based on that they would be leaving themselves open to all kinds of law suits. And given that i would not be surprised if the appointed someone from another country who has experience in the ROI.....

Did you have to fill in your religion on the application form?

You know ten people who could do the job. Even thinking conservatively, there may be another ten who you do not know. So twenty people, four did not get an interview- the other 16 may have more experience, or lower salary expectation, or whatever. Or due to budget cuts they may have decided to wait with hiring.

eh -I worked for eircom....as did the others - I just think it's odd not one of us got an interview - the ad wanted someone with cross border experience and I can honestly say we all do.

Yes, did have to give religion -but that doesn't make sense either - I'm catholic, two are protestant and one nothing.

    Ah well

Having Worked for Eircom probably worked against you ,Eircom and its staff would have a very bad rep in the market as an overpaid underperforming workforce

Perfectly suited to a governmental job then...

I would say u/ye were not specialised enough. ! Me thinks ..
Applying does not guarantee an interview.
If a government agency aren't they obligated to post the vacancy does that mean they are actively planning interviews though ?
It could be they already have identified a preferred candidate for it .

That sprung to my mind too.

The general job market, or are you referring to a specific segment? There's a lot of staff from various areas of the company (of several thousand people!) who don't come from the P&T semi-state era.

I would say in general but less so for IP engineers and I would not count Meteor staff.

Is this your opinion, or what you think the "market's" opinion is? It's quite uninformed, and I really don't think that's the case out there. I think there's a difference between the normal "eircon are all ****" sentiments you see spewed, and what an actual hiring manager thinks about.

It would be my opinion and that opinion would be shared by other hiring managers I know.
I was at a conference with Paul D were he stated that one of (if not the largest) issues Eircom faces is the return on Labour Eircom gets. While the old P&T are a clear problem the issues are wider than that. Eircoms unions unwillingness to address the skill issues are well documented and whether unfairly or not I see this being the markets opinion of Eircom staff.

I should have made it clear I'm talking very senior commercial management in eircom - not unionised - and this experience was years ago...my mate's is more recent (but would be on executive level - as in reports to CFO)

Sorry if this is off-topic, but do you think its better to leave this part blank if you're applying for a job in NI?

No as they have to report on it and in the public sector have some sort of quotas in place. If you are not religious then put down agnostic or atheist, if they don't know and you are Catholic/Protestant, then you could find yourself in a sticky situation down the line.
