Just bought a 01 Toyota Corrola (Opinions)??

    Hi all. I am posting this for opinions ect. I have just purchased my first car I am a 20 year old male with a provisional licence the car I have bought is a 01 Toyota Corrola 1.4 VVT-I. My insurance is €1730 third party F&T. Personally I think this is reasonable as I was quoted a lot more before. I know absolutely nothing about cars and have bought from a mechanic that is a friend of the family. I would love to hear some of your opinions on the car and insurance price ect and if the car is a good car. Also it has 140k on the clock and cost me €1300. All options welcome. :D Thanks

    sounds just about right :) i had a 00 corolla at age 20, wasn't paying much less for insurance and i had 3 years no claims at that stage.

    they are a good car (in my biased opinion) just keep it serviced and remember to check your oil level because some are fond of a drop.

    i asume yours is 5 door hatchback? any photos? :)

    that was a good price for a 3 door, they usually command a bit of a premium.

    Thanks ill have a look there now. It's also lowered a bit and I would like to get some nice mud flaps for it the original Toyota ones any idea where and price of them??

    easily pick up a decent set of universal ones in a motor factors for ten or fifteen euro... the original moulded ones from toyota might cost a pretty penny... you'd be surprised if you took a walk through a breakers yard you might get a set in good shape.

    Yeah will look in a breakers yard. There is a set of them on it already but the back ones are a little faded

    Had the exact same car from the age of 18 to 22. As another poster said, keep an eye on the oil level as the VVTI engine tends to be thirsty for it. Other than that keep her well maintained and you have a fine motor that will go for years. Best of luck and well wear!

    Great Cars, well wear. But as has been said keep an eye on the oil level also make sure to service it on time to ensure the longevity of the timming chain.

    It is also advisable to change the gearbox oil from time to time, as some of these suffer from failed gearbox bearings which is mostly down to lack of oil changes imo.

    Well wear op, just sold a 01 1.4vvti yesterday myself but its not your one it seems, saw the thread title and thought it was gonna be mine!

    As others said keep an eye on the oil, they do tend to burn a drop. I had mine for 4 years and the only problem I ever had was a window switch on the drivers side, cost me 80 quid. Really great car and I miss mine already!

    Also you seem to have a got a good deal, 1300 seems cheap! Sold mine for 2100, mileage was only 76000 though.

    Their going cheap enough!
    Bought an 00 one last month for 1200. 19 provosional and insurance was 1430.
    Still think they made a mistake a 1.0 micra was going to be 1350 :D

    Insurance is based on risk. More young drivers would buy a Micra than a Corrolla, so more Micras will have claims. If more young drivers start buying Corrollas then the insurance for them will go up.

    Good car OP. I had one. bit short of legroom in the back but you wont be sittin there so its moot.
    The 1.4vvti engine was quite powerful too compared to other 1.4's of the same era. 95bhp i believe?
    Good reliable nippy car. Enjoy.

    The older 97-00 bug eye model with the 1.3 4e-fe engine had a timming belt. The Facelift version with the 1.4 VVT-i engine had a timming chain.

    As for insurance, I had a 3dr hatch and a saloon and they both cost the same to insure.

    Just bought new alloys for it tho there 17" with low profiles there the ones that came on it in the picture.

    17 inch alloys are too big for these imo. They look massive in the arches. 16 inch alloys would be the max id put on, but hey that's just my opionion.:)

    If your going spending money on the car maybe painting the black trim to colour code it, would make a huge difference imo. just a thought :)

    As for extras maybe you would find some tte body parts, spoiler etc on the toyota owners club, they are hard enough to come by though

    Well universal mud flaps with Toyota written on them can be got in a motor factors.

    The original genuine Toyota mudflaps that are moulded to fit the wings and rear bumper would probably have to be got at the main dealers or online, they might also be found in a breakers yard.

    Are you talking about exhaust noise?

    A 'boy racer' exhaust is the equivalent of painting a Starsky & Hutch strip on your car, getting your name changed to 'Dukes' and plonking an RS4 badge on the boot. Its a medley of nonsense and looks daft to anyone who knows or takes pride in performance cars. It can also be borderline illegal given the noise regulations. And you will see immediate increased interest from Traffic Corp. Its like a homing beacon.

    If you really want to go down that route, at least get an exhaust that may add something to the car i.e. A performance exhaust. But without any other modifications your looking at zilcho performance increase. And on your car (IMO) its not worth the investment.

    Sorry, just my rant.

    OP says he's 20, first car and doesn't know a lot. The thread is a week old. Thats lots of time to read up, research and learn about what your car may or may/may not have. Lots of time to decide what he may/may not want. A week is along time on the internet.

I'm not talking about any crazy noise or anything I was just thinking about putting in a k&n insert filter don't want anything stupid. at least from what I have researched a k&n will slow the car to breeth better with a slight performance enhance and a tiny bit of a bite.     pete1430 is right I don't no alot about cars but since I bought it I have spent all my time looking up things and trying to learn about them. Also I'm not looking to give the car a "boy-racer" look at all its far from that. I just like the look of a few things and I want to see how they look on my car. I'm new to this so I'm trying to learn as the days go on. Thanks for the opinion.

I'm not trying to go down the boy racer route but just think what I have done to it looks nice IMO and since I'm so new to this its quite exciting.

    Ok, fair enough! At least you did some research. Honestly a K&N would be a waste of money on that engine. The performance increase would be so minimal you wouldn't notice it. Really and truly you should be only getting into air intake / exhaust mods when you've done work to the rest of the delivery systems i.e. The rest of the engine. If you really wanted to do something, I'd chip it while your at it. Not cheap but done professionally you'll get alot more umph from the car. Far more than any mod you can do yourself in 10 mins.

    You've also lowered and change the wheels. This will affect performance as well.

    I know it ain't my money or my business, but be-careful on what you put into the car in terms of finances. None of what you've done adds value to the car when you go to sell it. A better radio, bigger rims etc etc don't add much if anything to the selling price. It also makes a buyer wary as to what else has been done. Be sure you can at least get something out of the car when you sell it. However thats just my opinion.

    Don't re-spray it anyway. Would cost a fortune and unless you did the whole car it wouldn't come out right. Would always looks a shade (Excuse the pun) different.

    You could vinyl wrap it but then again it would be bad money spent. A good clean, wash, wax and polish would be my advice. Won't fix the problem but would come out looking good.

    Yup it is, it was rear ended at some stage, i presume before it being imported.
