I know you are thinking, not another wheel thread but I'm trying to decide on a new set of wheels for the Summer.
I'll be starting to race in the next few weeks and want to upgrade from Ksyrium Equipe to something a bit lighter / better performing and keep the Equipes as training wheels. Problem is I don't know what I need.

Do I go for carbon clinchers or light aluminum clinchers?

I am open to any suggestion within budget.

    Absolute maximum budget is E900

    Thanks in advance

Carbon, even with carbon specific brake pads do not brake as well in the wet as aluminum wheels.

Personally I'd go for the aluminium if I was going to only have one set of racewheels and I was having to race on some wet days.

Don't race what you can't replace.

If you can afford to replace busted carbon clinchers, go ahead. They fine for a race-specific wheel, even in the wet.

I've raced mine in all conditions and they're fine.

Definitely race first then buy after you have tasted racing. Your wheels won't make the difference between being dropped or not. They may cost you 1 place in a very tight bunch sprint, which is only 1 point lost and nothing which some training couldn't fix.

Listen to the second half of this.

They're saying deep rims in a cross wind are pretty awful. Are they really that bad?

Anything up to 50mm on the front is fine, in my experience. I've not ridden anything deeper (apart from a rear disc, which doesn't count).

Listen to the second half of this.

Very interesting podcast. Will definitely listen to the rest of these.

I've only ever had Mavic Ksyrium wheels. An 2009 pair of elites and the current equipe.
I have to say I haven't had any problems with them so will consider the SLS.

I would prefer a durable wheel than a potentially vulnerable carbon model.

    An update:

I contacted Derek at www.wheelsmith.co.uk and ended up pulling the trigger on a Race 23 wheelset. He proved extremely helpful and offered great advice on what was best to go for for my budget and requirements.

    Blurb here:http://wheelsmith.co.uk/news/63-wheelsmith-race23

Will try to post a review after a few miles have been racked up.

I bought the elite's and I have to say I'm very impressed. Light, strong and smooth. A great bang for your buck!

Did you buy from LBS or online ? I'm looking to upgrade to a set of Elites myself and trying to work out best value option

I bought mine from Richies cycle store in swords and I got a very, very good deal on them. A lot cheaper than chain reaction! Paid in cash for the best deal
