I'm looking for a( big) 2nd car which wont be doing more than 5000 miles/year therefore petrol. I'll be going for 04-05 up to 3 grand. I've driven a couple of avensis and I'm not so interested. I ve driven a couple of mondeo's, fresh enough cars without excessive miles but was not that impressed - drive ok but the engine felt flat - like the previous model. So will anyone share their views on the mazda 6 please?
    Thanks

Underbody rust is the main issue with them in my experience. Apart from that they are reliable enough.

I think they are great cars, particularly comparing to the rest of that bracket. I'm currently plotting replacing my 05, and it's almost certainly going to be either another 6, or (probably the more likely) a CX5

Mine has been kept coastal for its entire life, no rust issues at all.

Rear brakes commonly give trouble on these, just a point to be aware of.

This is very true, the calipers tend to seize in very cold weather. After both the big snows 2&4 years ago (or were they successive years?, can't remember) I had to replace them. Think at least one other time as well. Mine is also pretty oil thirsty as well, but it is 8 years old.

It's usually underneath on the rear chassis rails where they rust the most. Some also rust on the sills but most I have seen didn't have any in this area. Most though had exstensive rust underneath which can only be properly seen by having a good look under the car.
