Hi guys, does anyone know how much the fees are for a mature student? I've just turned 29, single with no kids. I applied for nursing this year, registered for the accessment test this week, if I am lucky and get offered a place for nursing as a mature student I'll be giving up a full time job like many others and am worried about how I'll cope with money. How much does the course cost? Is there a grant? Would be thankful for any feed back please!!!

If you have never been in college before the course tuition fees are covered under the governments free fees initiative.

You will be liable for the course contribution which will be €2500 (I think) in September 2013. However you can apply to SUSI for a fee grant to cover this charge. If your gross income for all of 2012 was under €49,800 (approx) you should be eligible for the fee grant. Details on http://www.studentfinance.ie

Most colleges have a student charge of between €100 and €300 annually. There is no formal support available to cover this.

Once you are a fully registered student in the college you can apply to the Student Assistance fund. This fund is there to help students with exceptional needs payments and once-off expenses although childcare, for example, can be covered on an on-going basis.

SUSI also offer a maintenance grant. To be eligible for this your gross income needs to be less than €39,900 (approx). The rate of maintenance varies from €315 to €5,915 depending on your income, distance from the college and social welfare status. Again look at http://www.studentfinance.ie for general information on this.

Social welfare have a BTEA payment for adults in fulltime education however to be eligible for this you need to be getting a social welfare payment for 234 days or 9 months before the course starts. You can get more information on the DSP website http://www.welfare.ie

If you are not eligible for any fee support at all, the fees for nursing, including the registration charge can be between €6,500 to €7,100 per annum for EU students.

NB: the reckonable income rates for the grant listed on student finance have not been updated to take account of the changes made in last Decembers budget. There was a reckonable income decrease of 3% across the board.I made a rough 3% reduction on last years figures to give the amounts above
