Lads I have about sixty acres of mountain land that the grandfather fenced off about forty years ago, do you think it would be possible to reclaim a portion of it to grow grass or would I be breaking the law? Another ten or twelve acres would be a major plus. Does anyone have any experience with reclaiming mountain land? Or am I dreaming a bit??

Depends if the land has been designated(NHA, SAC etc.). If its designated then the answer would be no.

Dont think you can just fence off some land and claim its yours. Now if you have deeds that a different story. I have a lovely mixture going from mountain to bog! But planted mountain as much better return than anything else

I didnt fence it, it was done before I was even born! Apparently whoever had rights on the hill fenced off a portion in agreement with their neighbours. All them lads are dead now but the fences remain. It could be much more productive if it were growing grass. I wonder could it be bought? would Coillte be the owners?

Look up the land registery...or try to get the land foilio num...my teagasc guy can see the folio num of all properties locally. but to id the folio will cost something like €15 per search.
