Engine oil for 01 astra

    Howdy people

    Just a quick question on what type of oil to put in an 01 astra, figured I may as well learn how to do it and save a bit of money

    It's a 1.4 comfort edition, manual, if that's any use, also does it matter what kind of oil filter you put on?

    Any help is appreciated :)

    Any Motor Factor will know the correct oil and quantity. A lot of people always use an OE oil filter from a main dealer. Otherwise, Mann make good filters.

    Gen up on the various things you need to know - e.g.:

    correct tools (socket for sump plug and filter removal wrench);

    safe access;

    engine oil warm not hot (so it flows but does not burn);

    remove filler cap before removing sump plug;

    latex/rubber gloves;

    suitable receptacle to contain old oil (and a means of pouring the old oil into a container which you need to bring to recycling centre - although your local friendly mechanic/garage may be happy to take it off your hands);

    new sump plug washer (should be included with filter);

    lubricate the o-ring on the new filter with fresh oil before fitting (clean the mating surfaces first).

    do not over-fill with new oil - too much oil is a bad thing. Allow time for new oil to settle in sump before checking the level. Again - do not over-fill!
