Abandoned ship located 'off Irish coast'...

    ...well, 2400km off Irish coast.

I was just reading this story earlier and found it amusing in how it is being reported.
A Russian cruise ship abandoned and adrift in the North Atlantic has been located about 2400km off the west coast of Ireland, according to a US intelligence agency.

With no crew or warning lights, the ship Lyubov Orlova has been adrift for two months and maritime authorities had been uncertain of its precise location.

According to a document from the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the Lyubov Orlova has been spotted at the coordinates 49-22.70N and 044-51.34W, or roughly 1300 nautical miles from the Irish coast.

The details were listed in a 'Daily Memorandum Atlantic Edition', a maritime update put out by the intelligence agency, which analyses satellite imagery and creates detailed maps for the US government.

With only rats as its passengers, the Lyubov Orlova had left Canada's shores on January 23 to be towed to a scrapyard in the Dominican Republic. But a day later, the cable snapped, leaving it stranded in international waters.

It was then secured by the Atlantic Hawk, a supply vessel in the offshore oil industry, which managed to take the ship under tow before it drifted off yet again.

Canada's transport authority has said the ship, abandoned for two years, was no longer its concern, as the vessel had left the country's waters. But officials said the owner was responsible for its movements.

Earlier this week, Canadian officials acknowledged they did not know the location of the ship, as the vessel's global positioning system was no longer working.

But the information locating the ship shows the derelict vessel is slowly heading towards Europe, having drifted at least 800km toward the European coastline.

lol... why the hell is Ireland even mentioned? In case you were wondering exactly where the ship is, it's here - http://maps.google.ie/maps?hl=en&q=49%C2%B0+22.70+N++044%C2%B0+51.34+W&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

I don't think the Canadians want anything to do with it. Wonder if it'll be allowed to drift until it becomes our problem :pac:

In other news, a Mayan temple has been discovered 8000km off the Cork coast

This car has also been abandoned. The invisible man is up to something:mad:

It has been parked at a car park in Cockfosters, North London for the past 21 days and has racked up £1,275 in parking fines.

.....................................Complicating the search for the vehicle's owner is the fact that it bears an Irish licence plate.

Put Willie Frazer and his band of merry goons on it and push it towards Antarctica.

Then it would be a veritable ship of fools.

I wonder could I just claim it along with its contents. Any experts on Maritime law able to advise?

As a general rule, non-historic civilian shipwrecks are considered fair game for salvage. Under international maritime law, for shipwrecks of a certain age, the original owner may have lost all claim to the cargo. Anyone who finds the wreck can then file a salvage claim on it and place a lien on the vessel, and subsequently mount a salvage operation (see Finders, keepers).[citation needed]

    I bags driving :)

Good man, we'll head down to the Maritime College and rustle up a few engineers and deck officers to help us get her in. Hopefully the engines start. :pac:

    I'm in, let's do this.
Irish coast guard rescues man found adrift off the west coast of Ireland. The man had tried to reach the Lyubov Orlova in child's blow-up dingy. The man had recently posted on a social media site (Boards.ie), that he intended to anchor the ship in international waters to start a marijuana-growing operation on deck.

Jeez I hope it doesn't end up here or we'll end up with another quango set up to deal with it after which it will end up in Nama. At which point we'll find a way to pay 1 billion euros to dispose of it in an environmentally sound manner.

I'm sure I heard or read somewhere that if you find an empty boat in international waters and tow it to shore you can then claim it.

A bloke in the pub told me all about this earlier. The plan is to let the ship drift until it reaches Ireland then 75,000 Russians will arrive here in order to carry it home but they will go 'missing' as soon as they land in Ireland and will be free to set up home and claim the dole after a few years. More and more Russians will arrive in order to search for the missing 75000 and they too will go 'missing'. It'll then all be forgotten about and never ever spoken about.

    Posting video number three four........

Company who ownded it went bang. Left the crew in a Canadian port for months. A year later it's towed out of port, out of Canadian waters and then OOPS! The tow line breaks. How convenient.
