Free agency set to open on March 12th, guys...may as well have a thread for it. So who's going where and who would you like to see your teams bring in?

Main 49ers Free Agents will be Randy Moss, Dashon Goldson and Delanie Walker

Moss may retire, if not I don't see him back in SF but you never know. Re-signing Goldson should be a top priority, he may even be tagged for a second year. I they don't tag Goldson they could tag walker but it would be expensive for a 2nd TE. I expect him to hit Free Agency.

David Akers will be cut I'd imagine and the other big question mark is what will happen with Alex Smith, I don't think he will be released so I'd expect a trade of some description between March 12 and April 1st.

I'd love for the 49ers to go for a WR in FA such as Jennings, Bowe or Amendola, however I don't think the Cap space would be there unless they were to part ways with Goldson and draft a safety.

I could see Greg Jennings in Miami with Philbin there. Interesting times ahead anyway.

EDIT: Also Ted Ginn and Isaac Sopoaga likely to move on too.

titans have signed George Wilson, very very happy about this.
Will improve the safety position immensely

Ravens have quite a few unrestricted free agents

    Danelle Ellerbe MLB
    Ed Reed FS
    Paul Kruger OLB
    Bryant McKinnie LT
    Joe Flacco QB
    Cary Williams CB
    Bobbie Williams G

Clearly Flacco is going nowhere, he will be slapped with the franchise tag if his deal stalls.

Kruger looking for 8-9 million a year and he'll get it as a free agent. Too much for the Ravens.

McKinnie was superb in the playoffs after being benched most of the season. A reasonable 1-2 deal will be offered I think.

Ed Reed? I dunno, does he want to go play for Belichek or Pagano.
Not a chance he'd settle for a cap friendly deal, he demands the $$$ and the cap space is not there

The two Williams can walk away

Interested as well in Wes Welker and Mike Wallace if they leave their current teams.Vikings talking about trading Percy Harvin too.

With Jennings, Amendola, Bowe, Henderson etc there will be quite a few good receivers in Free Agency/available for trade.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,299 ✭✭✭spiralism

We've a few FAs, notably Ryan Clady who is a top 5 LT. He's going to be franchised however, Elway has admitted. Our other free agents are largely unsung contributors like ST gunner David Bruton and Kevin Vickerson on the Defensive Line. We're likely to hit free agency with 10 mill + to spend.

I'd love to see us get Welker but i get the feeling he might go to Green Bay after they let Jennings go. Rodgers getting Welker would be a frightening prospect. Jennings will go to Miami or us. I'd love to see him in Denver, we move Decker inside and he's exactly the sort of low drama WR that runs crisp routes who Manning would love.

Incidentally, Manning texted Freeney about him possibly moving to Denver. While that would give us a positively alarming pass rush, I think he's Giants bound, he's said it would be a dream of his to play for them reportedly.

He is apparently looking for 10M a year. We're not going to pay him that. New York is worth a lot of money to Victor Cruz in terms of endorsements. I think it's become a very realistic possibly now. We're not going to tag anybody this year either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,299 ✭✭✭spiralism

    Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter

When two sides meet this am, Eagles will ask CB Nnamdi Asomugha to restructure contract or they will release him. Asomugha guaranteed $4mil.

Would be a great addition to any secondary. Eagles completely misused him. If he joined Denver it would be a fantastic addition. Bailey could move to Safety and he'd pick up where Champ left off at CB.

Is Ramses Barden becoming a Free Agent this year? Could be interesting.

He wants to stay a Giant. I'd say we'll resign him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

I would love for the go for Danelle Ellerbe.

    Giants free agents will be

    S- Kenny Phillips
    LB- Chase Blackburn
    OT- Will Beatty
    TE- Martellus Bennett

Our GM has hinted he wont use franchise tag which is odd. Beatty is a prime candidate for it if no new contract agreed.

The Cruz situation could get messy. The Giants want to extend Nicks as top priorty. They would like to keep Cruz but not for Vincent Jackson money. I wouldnt be surprised if they are even trying to shop him around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

I dunno about Ramses. Coughlin clearly doesnt trust him. If he wanted to stay for league minimum i'd say fair enough but I wouldnt be too sure.

Yeah but If Cruz takes off at least we have a WR that knows our offensive scheme.

Barden would be a great fit for your offence. Also Turner I cant see going for big money, he would be a great back up for Mathews.

That leaves money to spend to try get a Oline player like Levitre from Buffalo.

I expect Cason to hit the market from the Chargers and probably Philips, unless he takes a discount to stay here.

    jaysus, really?

Turner and Ryan "Owen Hargreaves" Mathews does not scare me as a backfield... nor does Barden as WR. He'd be a distant 3 behind Alexander and Floyd.

Which is exactly what the Chargers needs. You ask any Chargers fan and ask them does anyone scare them from Denver?? Not a lot of players would scare them, would be the answer.

I was only suggesting two cheap players who can contribute.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

    .

Barden has 29 catches for 394 yards in 4 years. Take out the Panthers game n it drops to 20 catches for 256 yards. Rivers had a bunch of no-names this year. Surely more of the same is not the answer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,238 ✭✭✭Justin10

Dont matter about stats, only two that are important are 6ft 7 and he isnt trusted. Rivers needs a Oline, when he had one he could throw to anybody.

Only mentioned them as cheap guys to contribute.
Levitre or Albert would be the big signings we be looking at it, few rumours about Bush too.

"Sources" say Joe Flaccos agent is meeting with the Ravens.

Honestly have no idea why espn is running this as news story a week before the deadline. Flaccos agent is pretty small time, only 45 clients for an agency is tiny in modern times and Flacco is the most important. Linta should be living in a tent outside the Ravens offices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,966 ✭✭✭Syferus

I was pretty sure the thread title was Geriatric Free Agent Discussion at first.

That'd have been way more awesome. Herschel Walker to the Falcons? Jerry Rice to the Dolphins? Brett Favre (back) to the Jets?

  • did this over on the eagles thread so its from there point of view but its relevant here

the next big event for me is

    Free agency 12th march

for me the most important thing in free agency is to pick up a veteran saftey we can draft another saftey and hopefully that will sort us out for the year if we dont pick up at least one very good safety we are in serious trouble

heres a few safety options first

jairus byrd - would be a great addition but i think the bills franchise him i would be delighted if we got him just cant see him hitting free agency. also as a former oregon player he may have a soft spot for chip kelly.

dashon goldson - again cant see him hitting free agency hes looking for about 8 mil a year and the tag number is only about 7.5 so the niners should jump on that

louie delmas - a good safety when hes healthy but seems to be injured more often than not probably to much of a risk we have picked up a few injury ridden safetys in the last while (ie. marlin jackson) and they never seem to work out

william moore - the falcons will try to resign him but i could see him hitting free agency hes young and has the potential to be a pro bowl safety i would love if we got him if he hits free agency expect him to be top priority

charles woodson - if we resign drc and draft a cb like dee milner or xavier rodhes or even a young saftey woodson would be a great pick up he could retire he has won pretty much everything he can but a former defensive mvp and i think the last defender to win a heisman would be great for our guys to learn off. hes also still a good player if he decides to stay on hes got a good season or two at least left in the tank.

patrick chung - if the eagles dont want to spend big money on a safety chung could come relativley cheap. hes a good player (certainley a big upgrade on what we have) and would slot in pretty easily) also at only 25 he could cover us for at least another 5-6 years if he pans out.

now other players big free agents this year

jake long (LT) - a big name that was one of if not the best lt in the league but hes had a bad run of injuries and is not the man he was i wouldnt mind having him here if he could be got cheap but i fear his name and previous production could get him a big contract (could go to the boys if they can clear some cap room)

sean smith, derek cox, carey williams (CB)- if we dump nnamdi we could try to pick up the cheapes of these 3 (provided we dont draft a cb) none are spectacular but they can all play decent on the outside.

anthony spencer (OLB)- if we move to a 3-4 front this guy was a stud last year (outplayed demacus ware in my opinion) he will want big money but insuring he does not resign with a division rival could make him worth a bit extra

paul kruger, conner barwin (OLB) - both players could help us move to 3-4 (if we do) barwin could come cheap after a poor year and kruger might cost to much due to just winning a sb

randy starks, richard semore (NT)- again if we change to a 3-4 we will need a nose tackle i think this years draft is deep at nt so we should go there but if not these guys could fill in for a year or two

andre levitre(RG)andre smith(RT)- if we dont draft a lineman in the first we should get one of these guys it would instantly turn our o-line into a strenght and the line would be as follows
    either: peters,mathias,kelce,levitre,herrimans
    or preferably: peters,mathias,kelce,herrimans,smith

dwayne bowe (WR)- i cant see us commiting enough money to him as wr is not a need but if we did get him he would give us our big wr to compliment d jax and maclin.

The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

I'd imagine it's the Chiefs (it's definitely not the Jags, according to Matt Miller). If it is KC and they get Smith in with say Joeckel as the #1 pick then that's a nice start for Reid.

This is good news I think, must have been a good deal for SF to agree to it this early.

I think Alex will do well for them too.

Funny how Kansas picked up the pieces the last time there was a QB controversy in SF too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,299 ✭✭✭spiralism

So is KC's streak of no QB they drafted winning a game for them in 30 odd years set to stand? sweet...

Being honest, retreads havent worked for them and even me at my pessimistic worst wouldnt regard them as a major threat for the AFC West with Smith at QB.

I think with Andy Reid, a solid QB in Smith, keeping Bowe then they don't look too bad, I don't think John Fox is going to cry himself to sleep over these changes but I think they could be a potential wildcard contender. Also a good first pick wouldn't do them any harm either.

Fair point. i think that's about the ceiling of it this year though.

One thing is though...Unless he does a total 180 on his entire coaching philosophy in the NFL to date, Reid isn't going to give Smith what he's comfortable with in a ball control, run heavy offence with simple reads. He's going to have him running a complex west coast system, throwing 30+ times a game and will underuse the run game. Bad combo.

Reid will continue to do what Harbaugh with Smith and that is develop him further. Don't forget Smith was having an extremely good season running Harbaugh's West Coast offense.

Another misconception of the WCO is that it is always pass heavy. The principle of the offense is to pass first build a lead and then protect the lead with a run game. Sure if the team can't build a lead they continue to pass but then all that tells you is the team is sh1te and the system isnt working.

One thing Smith has in his favour is that Reid prefers a shorter throwing game than Harbaugh. Crossing routes, slants, Ins and Outs and crossover routes. This will help Smith a lot more.

If Reid can build around Smith and continue to coach him on the development side he will do alright. Smith now has a point to prove also.

Looks like Stephen Jackson will become a free agent (as expected) following 8 1,000 yard rushing seasons

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000145343/article/steven-jackson-reportedly-headed-for-nfl-free-agency

So where would be a good landing spot for him. I presume he will want to go somewhere where he will have a shot at winning something.

GreenBay was talked about as a possible destination. I could see the Bengals and possibly Colts being interested too.

Somewhere he won't be the feature back. The most you could ask from Jackson is to give him >50% of the carries per game.

Atlanta might be a good shout, as they have Jacquizz Rodgers, who began to see significant time in the post-season and should take the majority of Turner's carries.

Here's a good article by Evan Silva, which runs down through the top 50 Free Agents and their likely landing spots.

Atlanta need to be looking at someone like Lacy rather than Jackson. With Tony G likely only having one season left in the tank you've got a lot of age going forward at key positions. The fact you'll likely be getting Lacy for good contract value to boot makes it the better long term play.

Gonzalez is retiring, he won't be back. I'm a big fan of Eifert so if I was Atlanta, I'd pick him up as a straight replacement and someone like Jackson to replace Turner short term.

Were Tony G to retire I'd take Eifert too. Maybe even if Tony sticks around so you could ease Eifert in. I think either way if Lacy and Eifert are on the board the Falcons will take one of them. We'll obviously know what their intentions are at RB (and maybe even if they have a desperate need for a TE) before the draft anyways.

I just feel like Jackson is almost guaranteed to hit the same physical wall Turner did last season next year, especially given he'd be asked to be the basher of a tandem with Rodgers. It could end up being a like-for-like switch apart from Jackson not having the hands of stone Turner did. I know Bradshaw's history of foot injuries is a concern but as a free agent his upside is a lot greater than Jackson's and would have to be tempting to someone like Atlanta. I'd certainly get a good look at that foot before I moved on Jackson.

    Done Deal apparently

CHIEFS, 49ERS AGREE ON TRADE INVOLVING ALEX SMITH.

    NFL.com

No word on what the actual deal is though.

EDIT: "An NFL source says that the framework of the deal is that the 49ers will get a No. 2 pick this year and a similar pick in the 2014 draft."

Mad amount to give up for a back-up QB the 49ers would probably have to release anyways. Who else was in the race to drive bidding that high?

Reasonable offer imo. The second pick is based on performance. The weak QB class in the draft is bound to have drove up the price too. Although technically a back-up he was leading the league in passer rating when he got injured.
Really hope he does well after all the knocks he has taken in his career. Would love to see a Kurt Warner like finish for him. In saying that he's only 28 but it always feels to me that he's much older.

Spot on. Utterly ridiculous price to give up. Smith is a good QB but not a top 15 guy.

Chiefs would have been better off taking Joeckel n trading back up or taking EJ Manuel or jst taking Geno Smith.

Considering they're likely to let Brandon Albert walk, by drafting Joeckel and having no second rounder they are only back at square one after the first two rounds. If Dwayne Bowe goes too what are they going to do? WR is their thinnest position by far

It smacks of short term planning. Alex Smith is 29 new season, Geno/EJ be 22/23.

The Chiefs should have taken a shot on a QB in the draft (Geno preferably) instead of trying to continue recycling other teams cast-offs
