I'd love to try a Charolais bull on a few of our cows this year..mostly Sim x Char, good scopey cows, had Lim past few years, terrific lively calves, but ultimately dont have the shape.
The big worry is the Ch when born tend to be lazy dopey beggars that won't get up and suck...am I wrong or are your experiences different?
Any particular Charolais bulls which youve used without undue hardship on this type of cow...pref Munster/progressive ai?

    Cheers!

I don't have Charolais but I hear they are very slow to get up to suck. I have a Hereford and Angus, the Angus are much livelier than the whitehead.

Moved from CH to LM this year. Much easier on Human, cow and calf. It all depends on what you want, big calves or a easier life style. But be aware that the odd LM can have problems as well. This year has been the easiest so far, but you never know whats around the corner.

Wouldn't agree fully that Lim don't have the frame. They appear small when born but they do well after.

I easily get Lim steers to kill out weights of ave 450 - 490kg at under 30 months. that is off grass albeit good grazing but with little nuts.Huge pro's to using Lim especially for the working man. Last Sunday night, cow calved at 12.50am. I had him up sucking the cow at 1.05am. I accept that he was an exception but the norm is about 40 mins and he is up and away. rarely have to take a calf and no bother getting cows back in calf. it's over 5 years since I had a section and that was a heifer that I overfed.

Had a AA born in the field during the present cold dry weather, couldn't catch the little begger yesterday to tag him! Had to go for reinforcements.

We would use a bit of AI, Sim, Part, BB and Lim generally. We have a CH stock bull. Comparing the breeds I notice the bigger the calf is the more likely it is to be dopey, slow to get moving, and slow to suck.
I think too your mineral management wants to be fairly spot on if you want lively calves. A lot of our CH calves would be up and motoring very well, but when we get a big bear of a calf they can be sluggish alright.
I wouldn't be one bit afraid to use the CH on the right cow though. The right one can be hard to beat at sales time!

Bizzums experience seems positive, and hes right, the Ch is hard to bate in the sales ring..I reckon I'll chance a couple through AI this year..Any particular bulls to go for / avoid?
    Ta..

Pistil (PXT) has a good repuation and handy enough calving. Producing heavy muscley weanlings but good on calving.

CF85 is also a great bull produces great cattle and calving not too bad.

Nippur (NPP) is meant to be meant one of easiest calving Charolais bulls maybe not as muscley as the other two.

Other lads might have other opinions on bulls I haven't used.

These can be got with Progressive Gentics.

Guys, what about Goldstar Echo, GHX ? Only 7.7% calving diff (90% rel)
    Texan-Gie x CF52. Figures look really good.
Cottage Devon (DEZ) is by Texan-Gie and he's 17.8% calving.

    CF85 - I think he's gone now.

I haven't used Goldstar Echo but his calving figures look great. I saw him in a bull book a few years back and then didnt see him been pushed in the latest catalog. But this doesn't mean anything it happened to other bulls that came back in the book years later.

CF85 could be gone now. I got a few straws off AI man in November for CF85 to keep for this year's breeding, bought them in advance to have them as they getting scarce
