Fatal Error - Advice?

So I have a custom built AMD 6 core PC, around 2/3 years old, 12g of Corsair Ram, Nividia 560 TI TOP, Dual Monitor and HDMI to TV.

No idea what happened or why, but I plugged in my microphone last night and the image froze on the screen.

I did a hard reset and when the PC turned on there was no image on the screen.

After a bit of messing around I got the image back up (by changing which monitor was plugged into where). I then plugged them all back in and all worked - until I restarted to make sure it was fixed and nothing worked again.

I only had time to check the setup with both sets of RAM taken out at different times but this didn't make much difference. The PC is also trying to access the DVD drive when it boots up a couple of times.

Incidentally, the new modem stopped working around the same time.

I hadn't made any other software changes but had uninstalled one or two old games I wasn't using anymore.

My next step is to try and reinstall windows. After that I will port in replacement parts from my last build and see what happens.

Anyone any ideas what might have happened?

sounds like motherboard, with so many parts failing at the same time.

Simple check is to look at the mobo, and see if any of the capacitors have blown. the "x" on top of it will look puffed out, and there may be a smell.

Beyond that, the hardware swap is a good idea, one item at a time and run some stress tests/restarts each time.

    best of luck
