VRT exemption

So I have moved back to Donegal and am in the process of getting all my stuff sorted with car, insurance etc.. etc...

I have two cars, one I bought last March and the other I bought back in 2007 (Currently off the road but I still have it)

I e-mailed the revenue the other day as I want to see if I qualify for an exemption on paying VRT as I am moving back to Donegal and was resident in Belfast since 2006.

Firstly what do I need to provide to show I was resident in the UK?
What are the limits on the exemption? I had heard as long as you had the car 6 months in N Ireland and I think 12 months for anywhere outside you do not need to pay VRT, can someone confirm this for me?

Lastly, I have two cars, can I move both home without paying VRT? or is there a limit on this?

    Thanks

You should be OK if you can prove you were using both cars abroad - insurance certs etc.

thats the law and the Customs go out of their way to look for foreign cars nowadays.

OP lived in Belfast since 2006 and is only now moving into the Republic (Belfast is in Northern Ireland).

It's already posted but have a read of this to educate yourself:

Here guys, I am from Donegal, went to uni in Derry and been working and living in Belfast since 2006 but am home in Donegal every weekend, I know all too well what the customs people do, my question was really around the 2 cars.. Someone told me I can only get exempt for one vehicle not 2...

    Thanks

    Seriously? Read the OP.

He is not talking about driving a UK reg car he is talking about getting a residency exemption for having lived in NI. In this case you get a ROI reg for the car but the VRT payment (ie the money only) is waived.

Does anyone know if there is any reduction in VRT if I inherit an car from a relation living in England?

There is no reduction. What you paid for the car is neither here nor there, the VRT is based on its open market value (or a version of it).
