What they are looking for is the 4% difference between the listed price inclusive of german VAT at 19% and Irish Vat at 23% (If they are trying to charge a full 23% don't pay it, but I reckon something just got lost in translation). If a company exports more than €100,000 worth of goods into another EU country then they must to VAT register in that country and charge the VAT rate of the destination country.

It sounds like HWVS must have hit that threshold recently or perhaps got a slap on the wrist from the taxman. (Although lots of people seem to get away with it).

Shame as it will make it a good bit more expensive if it is a permanent policy change, perhaps we should have kept it a B&U forum secret. It seems we are victims of making HWVS a success over here. :p

It actually also the reason Ebuyer stopped shipping to the ROI, because they couldn't be arsed dealing with the extra hassle.

I noticed another german online computer store now charges vat per country rate.

There is no custom charges within the EU.

The amount in the basket is all you have to pay.

German vat is included in the basket price. Normally this is all you have to pay... if it doesn't say anything else at checkout and this is just what your friend thinks then there is no extra charges.

Sorry I misunderstood slightly I though that HWVS had requested the 4% difference before shipping to you friend (I have heard they sometime do this although it appears to be the luck of the draw).

If it was just your mate telling you there is a 23% customs charge then that is not true as Germany is within the EU as spix has already pointed out.
