Fast Fit Waterford have the same offer running with the last 2 or 3 months.

Got a ridiculous quote from Advanced Pitstop in Clonmel for brakepads after getting a service done there (which was also a crazy price)and saw a sign a few days later when I was in Waterford advertising the offer.

Most of my car work is done by a retired mechanic who's an awful lot cheaper than the garages. I got one of those Grabone Advanced Pitstop vouchers so used that for the service (well I had to get a full service after buying the voucher which cost me in excess of €160 so thought it was a bit mis-leading --> not the price or the fact the voucher didn't give the full service but the fact that a full service cost €180).

Is that 69 per wheel, or 69 for all four?

    Brake pads so front two.

Brake discs are a lot more expensive as far as I know if you need them changed.

What do you mean? Most/many cars nowadays have pads on the back too....I wonder also if it a per axle price or for front and rear sets?

Is it for a full set of brake pads allround....as in fronts and rears??

Or is it just the fronts??

Fast Fiddle more like. I've had the misfortune of using their Santry and Clarehall branches and both times they tried the line of telling me I needed a lot more work done than necessary. Same line about a chunk out of a wheel and Santry threw in I needed a replacement exhaust etc. I'd only went in for punctured tyres! Me mates a mechanic and informed me there was feck all wrong with the wheel on each car each time and that my exhaust etc was fine.

Havent checked paddy but I'm sure the price would refer to fronts. A set of rear pads are always cheaper as they are smaller ( having to do a lot less of the stopping work ).

That said, €69 for front set supply and fit is a good price. A set of regular pads would set you back aprox 30€ from a motor factors. Installation is easy if you have the tools and are handy under the bonnet, but if not, then €40 for labour is decent.

And as the OP ad states "all cars", this price will NOT apply to your top end machines, not a chance.

last set i got fitted onto a mondeo cost €15 from local garage who let me supply them cost €30 so dont be afraid to shop around

It's a good price, but I would be worried about:

    a) The quality of the pads fitted, would definitely need to see what they fit

    b) The quality of the work itself. A simple job but have seen it messed up time and time again. The worst of which was the pads fitted back to front in the calliper!! So the metal backing plate was grinding on the disc!

    What car ?

I'm pretty sure thats impossible, its hard enough to get them in the correct way, never mind the wrong way around :)

I dont know what would be regarded as top end, but I just dropped a BMW 320D in to them this morning for the deal, so they at least have quite a reasonable range for that price.

^^ does it have a pad wear sensor that also needs to be replaced?

Yes, but wont know if it needs replacing until they have the car up. The guy said it is EUR 35 but they will try to salvage the old one. No call so far so I'm guessing they did save it. EUR 30 for sensor in Advance Pitstop so they are in the area.

Is the pad wear sensor on your BMW not incorporated into the pad lining ?

It was a Jaguar XF-R (not mine).

The pads are symmetrical about the vertical access if that makes sense, incredibly stupid thing to do but its true. The clips on the backing plate alone make it incredibly obvious!

Drove out of the garage and applied the brakes at about 5mph and just got the most awful metallic grinding noise ever.

I remember getting a quote off Advance for a set of pads for my Mondeo (all around disc breaks) and it was around €200, I had to laugh. Bought high quality pads for €60 and local mechanic fitted for €30.

Some places will try to convince you your disc is warped etc. You can't beat finding a local mechanic you can trust and built a bit of relationship.

What year 320d? Was the light for the pads on? If it was on or if it is an e90 then the sensor has to be replaced. If either of the above applies to you and you get the car back with the light off and not showing due then expect it to come on shorty or check that they have not chopped and joined the sensor. I work in a BMW garage and we get cars in all the time after having brakes replaced for "half the price of BMW" and then for the customer to find they have to fork out another €55.00 for the sensor and to reset the light. Also customers coming in complaining of squeaky brakes, and it's always down to spurious pads. Of all the things I will cheap out on, pads, tyres, oil and oil filters I will always buy genuine.

So, spurious pads squeak, and 'genuine' ones don't? Do the 'genuine' ones with copper grease pre-applied to the back then?

After you fit 'genuine' non-squeaky pads, what do you do with the almost new squeaky pads you have removed?

I bet you don't return them to the customer with the advice that they can be used if a bit of copper grease is applied to the rear when fitting....

Well first of all if the so called "mechanic" does not know to apply copper grease when fitting pads in the first place he is not doing his job properly and I wouldn't want him doing the job. And secondly do you really believe that a set of Quinton Hazell pads are the same quality as genuine. The compound of the pads can be different and cause them to grind/squeak. When i worked for a different main dealer there was a warranty bulletin for noisey brakes. If there was a customer complaint, the pads could be replaced with a modified set with a different compound to stop the noise. Most spurious pads are very poor quality, good ones do exist but for that money you can be sure they are not using Mintex.
And as for people that come to the dealer where I work with squeaking brakes that were replaced elsewhere we tell them the cause of the noise and rather than pay us to do the same work again, they generally choose not to get anything done.
