How strict are AerLingus on ski luggage

    Hi there,

Just wondering how strict AerLingus are on the 15kg limit for ski/board bags?

My gf's board bag, with boots, bindings & helmet is coming in at 11.7kg and she is intending on packing all her clothes in the bag too, so will be well over the 15kg limit. She has not booked another bag.

Has anyone flown out with them recently, and did they check the weight?

Also, do they cause a fuss if you take your ski boot bag as hang luggage?

    Thanks

Depending on whom you get at the check in Desk to be honest!

Their luggage policy clearly states that SKI bag is 1 Pair of Skis and Poles or 1 Snowboard to a Max of 16KG . So technically if you have anything other than the board in there they could refuse you.

Yes they are checking the weight, have had to grovel while travelling with 2 ski bags and race kit with them recently.

The easiest thing to do is book with Lufthansa/Swiss on Ebookers 23kg checked bag and a ski bag as part of your fare and for my last 3 flights 50% less than the quoted Aerlingus price before baggage.

Carry on ski boots is generally no issue at Dublin Airport, the trick is to get them into a normal carry on bag and then there is never any questions or issues but neither Ryanair or Aerlingus have a stated policy banning boots form the cabin.

    Thanks for the reply.

We are flying on Sunday, so I guess she will have to take her chances. Hopefully she will get away with it.

Between me getting a slipped disc in my back 2 weeks ago, and if she gets caught for extra weight, it wouldn't start the holiday on the best foot.

We manage to get our ski boots into our hand luggage along with our clothes. Remember its a skiing holiday not a fashion show. You need socks jocks a few layers and a skipants the amount of women that pack a hair dryer is unbelievable and then wear a hat and helmet all the time.

This is becoming a real pain. Ryanair now charge €50 for ski carriage each way (Aer Lingus charge €30). If you have a regular sized ski bag then it will only have room for the skis, poles and little else - even though this is well shy of their maximum weight for ski bags. This means that you will also have to check in a regular luggage bag at a cost of €15. With Ryanair's limit of 15kg on checked bags, and the reluctance of certain European airports to allow ski boots as carry on luggage, it means that you are paying a fortune and still tight for weight. There has to be a better way - anybody tried buying a long snowboard bag to fit in their skis, boots and luggage?

Lhtose, a double ski bag will cover you (No Wheels) Depending on your skis, AL have a limit of 16KG on ski bags and Ryanair give you 20KG.

As for the boots in Hand luggage there is only really one airport in Europe where it is an issue Grenoble, If you put your boots in a regular cabin bag you will never get any questions.

Travelled with Aer Lingus twice this season to Geneva and Munich.

Used my normal size ski bag and boot bag and padded them out with clothes. Took a trolley suitcase and large handbag as carry on. Was more than enough room for everything I needed to take.

No bother at check in with any of my bags. Infact they were busy on one of the flights so I got to check in my suitcase for free too when they offered it at the desk.
