Rekindling an Old Flame

I've been struggling with my irons for the past 2 years (since I got them really). They are Taylormade Burner 09s. Recently it's gotten worse. What the clubs make up for in yardage, they lose out (in my hands) in consistency. I've been hooking the ball and even duffing it far too often. I thought it was my swing, set-up, speed I was swinging that were problems and have been tweeking these constantly to the point where I had way to much going on in my head. Last weekend, in an act of total frustration, I did the Walk Of Shame to the shed and took out my trusty, old Mizuno MX-23s and headed to the range. OMG (as they say), hit them so nicely. Difficult to judge distance but iron after iron they were much better. Not playing this weekend, but will take these clubs out on the course next week and hope to God they do the business. Otherwise, it's a new sport for me!

Any of ye rekindled recently? :P

I sold my old Mizuno MX-20 irons and I wish I still had them even just for a weekend of catching up.

    Hi,
I'm not really sure irons have improved that much over the last 10 years and it's hard to beat Muzino irons.
I tried the MX 300's when they came out and didn't but them as i had just gotten a set of Callaways to replace my Mx 17's which only had a regular shaft.
Ended up buying a set of Mx 300's new from the states this year they are very similar to the JPX pro but i just prefered them.
So sory of gone back to the one that got away.

    Mike

Same same. Had upgraded to Titleist AP2 & loved them. Nice club with typically 'buttery' feel.
But just couldn't groove the swing. Had convinced myself that it was tempo & timing and experimenting with that really fcuked it up even more. So bit the bullet and took out my old MP32s.

Nobody makes 'em like Mizuno. The first irons I ever loved were TP21s and no matter how good or how beautiful other irons are (and the AP2s are lovely irons, which I have rehomed) the affair with Mizuno goes on.

What is meant by "buttery" feel?

That's what I'm thinking. If my fortunes improve this year I have a good mind to head up to Foregolf and only try with Mizunos!

Well I don't know about you, but I always spread a little Kerry Gold on the club face for that 'buttery' feel. I know it's probably illegal but no-one has fingered me to the authorities yet. :D

    That'd be a bit harsh :)

    Seriously, buttery?
As in knife through butter... Doesn't seem like you're making contact with the ball?

Never heard that expression before at all.

Hard to describe feeling that comes when you 'pure' an iron, especially a long iron. But there's definitely no feeling of hitting, the impact of striking the ball comes back to your hands as a smooth, well .... buttery ... feeling.

Maybe you have to love butter ;)

Am playing with Mizunos since before Xmas and can safely say they are the Kerrygold of buttery feel irons.

I have to agree, I upgraded from ping i10's to a set of MP59's last Sepemeber and I don't think I've come across a nicer feeling set of irons in my time playing golf.

Surely not as buttery as the new Nike 'Utterly Butterly' irons ? ;)
