Video out showing some potential usage scenarios for Google Glass.
Looks impressive and I look forward to the "how to get Google to ship it to Ireland" thread.

Having to wait until 2014 is the bad news.

    I want it now :(

I also want to replace my eyeballs with this technology.

I wonder how I would charge them...

Pricing is rumoured to be around the USD 1,500 mark.

Reckon I'd still order in the morn if possible!

    I would. No questions asked.

It woudl be good for a few situations, mainly on holidays or that.

But you'd have people using it for everyday stuff (like the rubbish that's posted on FB) such as what they're having for dinner that day!

That and it would just look a bit silly walking around with those things on your head.

Looks cool, but doesn't really appeal to me and will be used by people who have nothing of worth to share, I fear.

Would be cool for National Geo workers! :)

I agree to an extent, watching the video made me think how I'd have to take up something like skydiving to justify usage. However having seen the latest version of Google now running when travelling and the amount of useful information it can present I can really see how having that same resource available via the Glass platform will be bringing it to the next level.

Using the GPS/navigation and messaging/communicating hands free when driving are also attractive features.

Apparently you can apply to be a tester on their Google+ or/and twitter page with a check for $1,500.

    http://www.google.com/glass/start/how-to-get-one/

I would love to have such a device. I feel it would replace my phone completely if it has all the capabilities as the average smartphone.
My only worry is wearing it in dodgy areas...

    2. ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible to submit an Application to #ifihadglass, you must be: (1) a legal resident of and physically located in the 50 United States or the District of Columbia; (2) at least 18 years of age or older at the time of entry; (3) be a registered user of Google+ or Twitter (and remain a registered user in good standing until at least June 1, 2013); and (4) have access to the Internet as of February 20, 2013. #ifihadglass is void in Puerto Rico, U.S. territories and possessions, outside of the U.S., and where prohibited by law.

Looks like only open to Americans, plus you have to physically pick up at an event located in the USA.
Best add a green card and flights onto the $1500..

Love the idea of Google Glass, but really don't like the look. IMO it should look like a pair of sunglasses or similar. not obviously something techy.

Don't worry, at that stage there'll be plenty of smug assholes going around with flashy watches, you'll look fine

The $1500 price tag is only for the developer edition, Google haven't released any retail price yet. It's safe to assume they'll sell for less then that though.
Google has a history of selling for less than full value.

The developer edition is only available to people in the USA for now.

Considering how much those glasses can do (internet browsing, voice recognition, video recording and of course augmented reality) they are really powerful considering how small it is. The battery power would also have to be somewhat decent as well

I'd love to know how they get the thing to stick to your head when skydiving, on a rollercoaster etc. I wouldn't wear my normal glasses for that let alone ones that cost over a grand.

Id imagine a 3 Dollar band around the back of your head just like you can get for any glasses on the market.

Great article (with video) here by Joshua Topolsky from The Verge. He meets with Google and gets to use the Google Glass for a day.

Joshua Topolsky had done a great job on promoting The Verge and making it a very good mainstream site, which is very impressive considering how new the site is.

He's managed to rail in his staff so they are less biased towards a certain brand, either Apple or Android.

Looks like it connects via WiFi or to your mobile via hotspot only.

It's a prototype of a new tech, give it time to mature

They're trying to keep it as slim a possible.

Adding 3G or 4G to it would increase the size of it to allow for a SIM, even a Nano SIM would increase it a fair bit.

It's also still early days, so they may find a way to add it.

They do, don't they. I think Josh has a good relationship with Matias Duarte as well.

Get used to taking them off a lot..

I can see commercial and business premises, coffee shops, restaurants, banks, museums and similar, 'public accessible but private' areas, becoming hostile to Google Glass and similar devices very very quickly.

Given the litigious nature in a lot of countries now. Remember the Steve Mann 'assault'..?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭Kxiii

Google have reportedly confirmed a release date of 2013 and the price to the end user may be less than the reported €1500 Link.

I'd say they will at first but if they take off it'll happen less and less over time until no one bats an eyelid. The same thing happened with camera phones when they came out. They should have just called them pedo phones given the reaction a lot of people had at the time.

These are going to need some sort of anti-theft device built in or skangers will have a field day snatching them.

Might sound like an odd question but, will it work for anyone with typical vision impairments, short sight or long sightedness?

    This too shall pass.

Apparently this is something they are working on.

I think the current plan is to let you clip the device to your glasses and continue on as normal.

Head to theverge.com and watch Joshua interview and hands on testing of it. He does ask the question, and frankly is be amazed if Google didn't allow for this as it would be a major market share.

How is this going to operate in somewhere like a cinema? I mean it's a lot more obvious if somebody records footage with a mobile phone or cam corder but recording via glasses would be impossible to detect.

I also envisage people using them not paying proper attention to where they're walking, driving, etc whilst looking at the internal display and a few more accidents occurring...

Iirc the video footage only lasts 30 seconds or so?

As for the driving, the same was said about gps in cars and that doesn't cause a massive amount of accidents I believe.

Then again, Glass is still very much a work in progress.

I'd put this far ahead of texting as normal with your head down, now you can have your head faced straight ahead.
