    Hi folks,
A good friend of mine is in the market for a new BMW and is seeking some advise - so I thought id ask the good folk on the Motor Forum. He has his eye on a 2010 Dublin reg BMW - 520 Diesel, Automatic SE. Its a business edition with about 60,000 miles and one owner.

He was trading in his own 2003 Dublin reg BMW 320 series Petrol Manual with 180,000 miles.

The price he was offered was €25k including trade in.

    Any thoughts?

He is basically being offered next to nothing for his old car as it is pretty much worthless to a dealer to resell it on. I bet he would buy the same car at that price or less if he wasn't trading in any car. Best thing I would do is try to sell the 3 Series privately, even if he only got €1000/€1200 for it and bought the 2010 520d for €25k straight he would still be up on the deal.

Also just so that he is aware the 520d he is looking at is the older E60 model with the 177bhp M47 engine, this engine is known for having timing chain issues. I heard recently though that it is possible to replace the chain without taking out the engine which reduces the labour costs. Doesn't happen to them all but something to be aware of all the same.

dunno about buying bms friend of mine bought a 08 320 diesel paid 21 k straight last year car was warreted 54k miles and 2 year warranty nice eh
well with in 8 months the battery kept dying so rang the dealer and was told it would be covered under warrenty the service dept gave us an appointment for 2 weeks later to have the car checked out so that date arrived and car was left with dealer and a courtsy car supplied next day phone call recieved to say the car was checked out and the battery was faulty and would cost 220 euro to replace when we said car was under warrenty we were told that the journeys were too short and frequent that is way the battery was nackered
so they said that the battery would have to be ordered in for it so still have courtesy car about an hour later dealer rang again to say that they had made a mistake regarding the price of the battery that it would actually cost 525 euro needles to say friend is hopping mad with them and told them not to do any thing yet we rang another dealer and the biggest battery that would actually fit would cost 330+vat
so now we are wondering are we being taken for a ride and will they find some thing else to get out of warrenty work in future if they are saying the car wasnt used for long enough to keep the battery up
    any thoughts?

Do you have an actual question? Your mate is spending €25k on a three year old car - without seeing the car its impossible to advise anything except bring an expert to check it over and get the longest possible warranty on the whole car. Buy one if necessary.

Yes - is that price a good deal for a car with a good service record, an interior and exterior in very good condition and with the above mentioned millage and trade-in.

Shop around and you will get a same/similar spec car for cheaper? Run away, they are screwing you? Take the hand and all of them its a great deal? :)

Before posting again i'd appreciate it if you could use sentences and paragraphs.

From reading through most of that, what I gather is that your friend needs a new battery. Go to a motor factors and you'll get a massive battery fitted for about 100 quid. I would have thought they would have been sound to include the battery, but to be fair it's a consumable item. Most warranties would only include engine/gearbox. But it would depend entirely on the warranty document your friend got when he/she bought the car.

On an 08 bmw they also need to register the battery if it's the same capacity, or re-code if it's a different capacity. Otherwise the new battery will only last 2-3 years...

Worth thinking about the new F10 5-Series if he's around the €25k region. Also worth selling his own privately. I'd even think about a UK F10 for that money.

Timing chain issues would have been addressed with upgraded tensioners etc by 2010 no?

sorry about lack of sentances etc
but what i was trying to say was
the sales man who the car was bought from told us the battery would be covered under warranty
the service dept then said it wasnt that it would cost 200 odd quid to replace which was bad enough
then came back and said they made a mistake that the proper price is 525 euro
just thinking that 525 euro is a bit excessive and well to be honest a bit of a rip off
would buying a battery from a motor factor affect warranty ?.

What? I think you may have me confused with someone else. :)

Not on the E60 afaik. It was mid 2010 by the time they sorted it and by then the F10 was being launched which had the reworked 184bhp engine.

25K without trade-in. Higher miles though.
So it sounds like an ok deal, he won't get much for his 2003 with that mileage.
