    Hi,
After cancelling sky, I now would like to 'replace' it with the next best thing. I would like to record if possible and watch another channel etc.

I was told about a HUMax freesat HD box but when I google it all the sites say it's discontinued. Is there a newer version out?

I have saorview on the tv so I am wondering is this the best box to get or the closest one to the sky features of recording etc?

Also, is this type of box just plugged in to the existing 2 sat feeds and the tv the same as my existing sky box?

the new version is called the Humax HDR-1000S it has freetime on it too (on demand / catch up) though the internet. Some of the freetime stuff is geo blocked (UK IP only). The old box I thing you are referring to is no longer manufactured but you may be able to pick up a second hand one or refurbed.

Also, yes, just plug the two cables running from your existing setup into the back of the humax.

That's great. I think getting the most up to date one would benefit me into the future perhaps.
Can the box use wifi or must it be hard wired to ethernet. Reason is I don't have a network where my tv is so wifi would be the only option other than running cables which I am not going to do at this stage.

Finally, where is the best/cheapest place to get one?

You can add a USB Wi-Fi Dongle but I think you have to use the humax supplied one - which costs an extra £40.

The new machine is supposed to be a bit buggy at the moment but the Foxsat was the same for the first year or so but, once they worked out all of them, it became pretty much bulletproof so no reason to expect this won't be too eventually.

As for best/cheapest place - not always the same - you could try Richersounds through their forum on Boards or there is Amazon.

That depends on what you mean by "best". Are you referring to warranty duration or customer service/technical backup?

Cheapest would be a used one from wherever, followed possibly by Humax's own "refurbished" offerings or tvtrade.ie

Yes warranty and backup are important, followed by price

It might be worth also considering a linux based satelite receiver, It depends how 'techie' you are, but i have a Vu+ duo satelite receiver with a usb terresterial tuner attached to it. It has a 7 day epg pulled from the internet, and allows you to watch all free satelite channels as well as the Saorview channels. Its a pretty good solution if you want all on the one box. Its a little tricky to set up though so its definetly not a plug and play solution like the freesat boxes. The dissadvantages of the freesat boxes is that you wont get rte channels on them..
