I'm taking entries for the Virginia 300 Audax which is on Saturday March 16th 2013.

This year it will start in Phibsboro, and there have been a few changes to the route since last year. It is slightly shorter, slightly hillier, fewer main roads, and more controls.

This is a self supported event, meaning you need to support yourself in terms of navigation, proof of passage, food, hydration, repairs, etc. Lights are mandatory.

Last call for entries for this. There are around 15 entered so far, which is a healthy number for a 300 in March. Paypal would be preferred at this stage, but I'll still take postal entries if you get them in quick

There were around 13 starters for the first 300km Audax of the season, heading off at 6am from Phibsboro yesterday morning. The weather was a bit chilly, but the roads were fine, with no sign of frost. The Sealskinz Lobster Mitts did the trick apart from being a bit fiddly for changing gears they kept the fingers toasty. The first Control was in Donore at 43km and as there were no shops open it was a case of signing the Brevet Cards, and heading onwards. The second Control in Wilkinstown had a Garage open and we all stopped for Tea/Coffee etc to get properly warmed up. There was aslight headwind, but that was ok, as it boded well for a tailwind coming home. The group broke up a bit after this, and I ended up with Rottenhat and Andreas for the rest of the day, meeting others at various points along the way for a while. Bernard and Geoff were flying ahead at a good pace. In Castleblaney we hit the shops again for another feed before turning West towards Virginia acorss the Drumlins. It was a bit rolly, but not too bad, and the wind was more crossways at this stage, with plenty of nice views of assorted lakes along the way. We signed Cards again for the Controls at Ballybay and Collinstown, and in between those two we stopped in Virginia for a good sit-down feed of Sausages/Roast Pork/Club Sandwich respectively. There was a hail shower, followed by some cold sleety rain which soaked my second gloves, so I was pleased when we stopped for the last time in Ballivor that I had my Sealskinz in the pack ready to go back on again for the last 50kms home. We got a bit lost coming back in through Dunboyne and Clonee, and missed a right turn on the route, but eventually muddled our way in through Clonsilla and Blanchardstown and back to the Start at Phibsboro at 9pm for a 15 hour day. Thanks to Vigorelli for organising a good route, it was an enjoyable day out, and the legs are surprisingly intact for the time of year ! Well done to all those who completed their first 300 Audax !
    Cheers, LG

Yep, we missed that right hand turn too! Nearly ended up on the n3 but turned back and ended up on the correct road (i think!)

We must have just missed the sleet and rain thank god.

A great day out, and a nice write up too
