    http://www.independent.ie/irish-news/plan-for-riostyle-statue-at-summit-of-croagh-patrick-29077008.html
A 100ft-tall bronze St Patrick is being made by a Canadian sculptor who plans to present it to Ireland.

The $10m (€7.5m) artwork is the brainchild of Tim Schmalz, who has already designed numerous religious pieces around the country.

In what would be a somewhat similar location to that of the statue in Brazil, he hopes to erect his sculpture on Croagh Patrick in Co Mayo, where St Patrick is said to have banished snakes from Ireland.

What do ye think lads? They could fit lasers into the statue's eye sockets, could zap any remaining snakes from a distance of 80km!

The Diaspora. It fits in well with the philosophy of the 'Gathering' or so the comments section of the linked page tells me

Sure isn't that what they said about the Statue of Liberty. Look at it now, they're selling t-shirts of that smug face by the dozen.

Yeah but would you be able to see a new childrens ward from 20+ miles away? I want to see this statue when I'm out for a walk on a nice sunny day. Get your priorities in order mate.

You'd think Ireland in 2013 would want to move away from shite like this.

There's barely enough room on the top of that hill for a hiker to sit down and catch his breath without a sodding big statue cluttering the place up. We need more statues of Phil Lynott, not that Welsh fraud.

IRELAND could soon have its very own statue to rival Rio's world-renowned Christ the Redeemer if one artist has his way.

    Mystical
"I've travelled around the world and seen religious sculptures in every land," he said. "I noted the complete absence of a large sculpture of St Patrick in Ireland and would like to remedy that.
"I want it to be a gift to the Irish people from Irish descendants, almost a thank you to Ireland for Irish culture."
Mr Schmalz believes it will take two years to complete the project. The sculpture will be built in 10 pieces at his studios in Ontario and Beijing before being shipped to Ireland.
The artist described Croagh Patrick as a "mystical place".
"Something like this would put it on the world map. It would be a true celebration of Irish heritage," he said.
However, his plans have been met with some concern in Mayo. Fr Frank Fahey, of nearby Ballintubber Abbey, who has been leading pilgrimages up Croagh Patrick for many years, questioned the need for such a monument.
And a spokesperson for Mayo County Council said it had not been approached about the plans.
Mr Schmalz recently completed a sculpture of St Brigid, which is to be erected in Kildare. He plans to base his St Patrick on a similar design, and is currently finalising the details.
He will first produce a life-sized piece from which he will then project the measurements for the 100ft sculpture.

    Laughable bits in bold.

A great example of very made media reporting:

"IRELAND could soon have its very own statue to rival Rio's world-renowned Christ the Redeemer if one artist has his way."

The Indo is really going down market.

I think we should have a giant Casino on the top of Carrauntoohil with a cable car to bring up the punters. I'm sure they'd be no trouble getting investors. 'Twould do wonders for our beleaguered tourist industry and enhance the wonderful Kerry scenery. I'll send this great idea into the Indo and hope to get a headline:

"Ireland could soon have its own Las Vegas on the top of our highest mountain."

Then they could ask the local people what they think of the idea and get a very interesting debate going.

If he thinks the place is so mystical then why does he want to stick a feckin' garish 100ft bronze statue on it?

Money maker for him. Material costs including installation will be a fraction of the ten million. He is probsbly valuing his art and sculpture work at a couple of million. Organise a collection then profit by taking out the large fee for his work.

I think we should build a giant mosque on top of Croagh Patrick and put the 100 foot statue on the border with the North and here's hoping we can piss off loads of people while we do this.

There's a reason for that. They're fúcking hideous, mostly.

Would a 100ft bronze statue of Cuchulann not be better? Or 100 x 1ft statues?

Ill go against the grain of this thread so far and say this sounds like a great idea.

People will come to see it and may help to boost tourism. Also, if the taxpayer aint paying for it, then what is the problem?

When will they ever get round to getting the cable car to the top installed..

I think it's like one of those gifts that you only put out when the person that gave it to you is coming to visit, and after they're gone, you throw it back into the press, until the next time.

Like those stupid fúcking seashells with googly eyes glued to them, like the one that your brother got you when he was in Lanzarote that one time. Course everyone else gets a bottle of something alcoholic, but no, because you're 16, you get fúcking seashells. Fúcking seashells.

That would have to be one hell of a press, though, to fit a 100ft silly statue

We could hide it on an island in Clew Bay. The one John Lennon spent time on, perhaps.

Ex 20:3-4 (NIV) "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below."

Well the statue seems to confirm to Catholic hypocrisy anyway. Build away lads!
