Birth weight measurement

I received a tape measure from ICBF today to measure and thus predict birth weight. Measured a DZP calf born yesterday morning: chest circumference 80cm, height at shoulder 75kg.

Anyone else get this? Pity there isn't a chart included giving the predicted birth weight based on these 2 measurements:rolleyes:

Use an ordinary cloth tape measure. Girth by girth by length (tip of shoulder to tail head) divided by 300 will give you weight in pounds divide by 2.2 to convert to kg.

OP are you in gene Ireland,/ getting paid for this?

I find it hard enough as it is to get the tagging done without having to measure them as well:confused:

I'll always remember bertie ahern tagging a calf on the front of the comic. He had someone else holding the calf for him and him with a big fookin grin on him for the camera.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Luck you don't have pedigree Limousins. For 2013 calves, they are going to send you a hair sampling kit and you have to send off a sample of each calf!

Reilig I'd say it's only a matter of time before we all have to do this, DNA traceability etc. They're getting a nice few (ear) samples in the post at the moment, with tag numbers......... or am I just being paranoid again?

A former college lecturer of mine crossed a charolais bull on jersey cows. It was before the Jersey herd book was 'closed' and a couple of generations later he had pedigree jersey cattle which were 1/8 charolais:D:D:D

He was the type of man who only did it because he could.

Yup in gene ireland. I've a share of calves by the CH bull DZP which are shaping up nicely. Also some by the SI bull APZ.

They want them measured within 24hrs of birth so easily handled at that age. Only 2 left to calve so they were a bit late getting the tape out to me.

Dunno what you got from ICBF, but i suspect its the tape which gives estimated weight fron the circumference of the calves foot - you measure just above the hoof, where the hair starts...tape has 2 sides, one for male one for female..i did one yesterday for the craic..showed AAcalf at 40 kg..I'd have thought he was around 35....

Different tape to yours. You've to take two measurements as mentioned in op and submit them to icbf. My issue is they don't tell you how to estimate birth weigh from those measurements.

Agree and will get one. Currently however with my limited funds there are higher priority investments.
