    1. What is your budget? €300-500??
    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Photo editing + music
    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes, Win7?
    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Yes, keyboard, mouse
    5. Do you need a monitor? no
5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? 1440x900 --> 1920x1080 --> ++
    6. Do you need any peripherals? (No)
    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No
    8. How can you pay? credit card, bank transfer
    9. When are you purchasing? 1-2 months
My current (store bought) set-up is a few years old and it's slow and noisey with lots of wires and external hard drives and plugs etc hanging off it. I need a new tidier & faster computer set-up that will last me 2 or 3 years and would appreciate your help :)

I'm looking for a quiet desktop computer that I can use to edit photos (lightroom/photoshop) while I'm listening to music (I'm stuck with iTunes). I have ~1Tb of photos and ~1Tb of music (2Tb/disk should be ok for the next 2/3 years?). A lot of photographers have moved from photography to video so I may need basic video editing capability in the future? At the same time, I'd be browsing the web (Firefox). I have no interest in gaming but I watch the odd video. LR/PS/iTunes/Firefox use a lot of memory in my current setup. I also use Outlook for email and FeedDemon for RSS. These are my main programs.

I've read the Adobe recomendations for LR and PS and I believe the best solution for me is:
    - 64-bit Windows (would prefer W7 instead of W8?)
    - Lots and lots of RAM (16Gb?)
    - Core i7 processor ("turbo boost in i7 sandybridge"??)
    - SSD for OS + scratch disk ("If your startup disk is an SSD, there is no benefit to selecting a different disk for your primary scratch disk. Using the SSD for both your system startup disk and your primary scratch volume performs well.")
    - 2 separate internal fast 2Tb hard drives: 1 for photography and 1 for music.
    - 1 connection 'out the back' to a back-up source (e.g. RAID - I need to learn more about this).
    - A decent GPU ("For Photoshop to access the GPU, the video adapter must have a GPU that supports OpenGL. It also requires at least 128 MB of RAM, and a driver that supports OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0.")
    - I have 1 monitor at the moment but would like the option of 2 monitors if I ever win the lotto. (I need to learn more about monitor connections...)
    - A 'decent' sound card (Most of my MP3's are 320kps)
    - A quiet set-up would be a bonus since the fan on my current computer starts up pretty quickly :(
    - A few USB3 (or USB2) ports front and back would be nice.
    - An optical drive for burning DVD/CD's
    - Built-in wireless adapter

I'm sure I've forgotten something obvious so please feel free to correct my mistakes.

    TIA :)

Your looking at round 900-950 for everything you mentioned there.

Could build a decent AMD FX build for 600

Not a chance that you'll get what you're looking for with €500. I'd advise you to save up about twice that, then come back. If that's not feasable, I can spec something out for you, but it won't be anywhere near what's up there. i3 dual core, 8GB RAM, 500GB mechanical drive, type thing.

Thanks for the replies and the heads-up on the realistic cost. Those specs were for a dream machine for myself so I wasn't sure how much it would cost. I'll come back when I have closer to €1,000 to spend.
