Going to have to start doing a lot more driving (400-500 miles a week plus) so am going to have to get a better car. I have a budget of 7k. Any recommendations as to what is the best value in terms of effeciency , reliability and price? All help greatly appreciated.

My dad is currently driving 1500km 930 mile a week. He is using an octavia. You would get a nice 1.9tdi for that money. Ours is currently doing 1100km to 50 litres of diesel 62 mpg. And that is driving it on all the time my dad is not a slow driver. Astra 1.7cdti would be a good car too very reliable. Possibly a passat but you will struggle to get a nice one within budget.

I know, I'm very enthusiastic about it, but why not try LPG? I don't know where you live, but if it's somewhere near an LPG filling station, you'd be able to save quite a lot compared to diesel cars.

Leitrim unfortunately so not possible (I think), out of interest is there much of an issue with resale on LPG's?

At the moment there is, but I'd say LPG will catch on in the next year or two. More filling stations are opening up, and more mechanics are converting the cars.

Petrol will go up again, since spring is coming, you can see pricing rising already, so I wouldn't be surprised to see €1.80 for petrol and €1.70 for diesel in July.

Ya never know if they cop on and allow water only fracking in North Leitrim it might really take off! I'd have no bother in getting a fill I'd say then. Definitely one I'll keep an eye on when I have to buy the next one.

Any if the usual rep mobiles will go through that mileage no bother. Ie. passat, Octavia,Mondeo etc

Doing 500 a week in a 1.9 Tdi Passat and its extremely reliable and economical. Plus when you get out at the other end your still fairly fresh which was something I hated about French cars, they were ultra comfortable but just a bit too comfortable and this used to make me want to have a sleep when I arrived :(
