With less than two weeks to go to these championships in Gothenburg, AAI has set this Sunday as their deadline for naming the Irish team. Up until now there seems to be 10 athletes with the qualifying mark:

    Brian Gregan: 400m
    Ciarán Ó Lionáird: 1,500 and 3,000m
    John Travers: 3000m
    David McCarthy: 3000m
    Stephen Scullion: 3000m
    Derval O’Rourke: 60m hurdles
    Fionnuala Britton: 1,500m and 3,000m
    Ciara Everard: 800m
    Amy Foster: 60m
    Tori Pena: Pole vault

It remains to be seen if State-bound McCarthy and Ó Lionáird will choose to compete and what event Ó Lionáird might then go with. Ireland can send a maximum of 3 athletes in any one event.

Hopefully Ailish McSweeney can also make the qualifying after her dq disappoint last weekend

Does Mark English not have the standard?

He was someone i was really looking forward to seeing run in a senior championship situation.

He certainly does, 1.48.44 is inside the 1.48.50 qualification mark.

John Travers ran 3.42.52 (inside 3.43 q. mark) in AIT at a tester event. It's listed on this season's top list so I assume the AAI will credit it as a qualification mark?

    Brian Gregan: 400m
    Ciarán Ó Lionáird: 1,500 and 3,000m
    John Travers: 1500m and 3000m
    David McCarthy: 3000m
    Stephen Scullion: 3000m
    Mark English: 800m
    Derval O’Rourke: 60m hurdles
    Fionnuala Britton: 1,500m and 3,000m
    Ciara Everard: 800m
    Amy Foster: 60m
    Tori Pena: Pole vault

    Thanks.

Potentially the most exciting team we have sent to a championship in a long time with Gregan, English and O'Lionaird as medal contenders at 23, 20(?) and 24. That is before Derval O'Rourke and Fionnuala Britton are counted.

European indoors is an event that Irish teams SHOULD be coming home with medals from so hopefully we pick up at least one.

English looked very impressive winning the 800m indoors at the weekend.

Mens 3k you have 4 with the time so for me Scullion misses if Travers goes for 3k over 1500m.

Yes Scullion is slightly quicker but didn't run nationals.

If O' Lionaird runs 1,500m its same thing, say Scullion has good chance of making the plane.

English isn't running, focusing on outdoors, Euro under-23s being the big target.

Yeah I heard that too. The dude was moving ridiculously easily on Sunday, he was practically jogging around. He's going to run some serious times this year if he stays injury free.

A pity. Very understandable but still a pity.

Dave Mac has the 1500 standard from his 3.57 mile in Boston. Credited with a 3.41.84 though I say given the manner of his 3k win that would be the target event if he goes

8 athletes assured of their places, with Travers and Scullion most likely to join them. Hopefully we can get one or two others on the ticket this weekend.

That picture of Travers time trialling 3.42.53 is still been on display.

Surely its not acceptable for qualify time for Euros?

Of course it is,was electronic timing.
Travers will break 4minute mile this weekend btw ;)

    McCarthy out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,717 ✭✭✭YFlyer

Yes I hope he does. His running well these days.

Didn't know out of competition times are counted for qualifications. I'm guessing records don't stand.

Here's RTE's coverage of the Championships. They are streaming the whole championships on their website and have the following TV coverage on RTE2:

    Friday: 8pm
    Saturday: 3.25pm
    Sunday: 10.45am and 3.15pm

It seems Jerry Kiernan, David Matthews and Thomas Chamney are part of the studio team.

    Good coverage to be fair!

What about Gregan's opposition in the 400m? There's Maslak and the three Brits. Otherwise, anyone else that would be serious contenders for the gold? No sign of the Borlee's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,290 ✭✭✭Oregano_State

    very controlled there by Gregan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 886 ✭✭✭Caprica

Gregan first in 46.97, thought he was pipped at the post, he slowed up in the final few metres. For lane draws finishing first is important.

Both guys have been giving the same time but Gregan is ranked first.
