VW 1.6 FSI Engines?

    Hi All,

Im currently looking at Golfs with the 1.6 FSi engine, so far I've heard they are quite troublesome and shouldn't be touched. Nobody seems to have anything good to say about them. The main recurring issue regards the timing chain and tensioner.

I've been told the 1.9 TDI is bulletproof and that has been said on this forum too. The problem I have is trying to find one which is less then 150,000 miles for my budget 4500-5000.

So are they really that bad and should I hold out for the Diesel?

The 1.6 FSI is nowhere near as bad nor is the 1.9 TDI as good as you would think from reading online.

If you aren't doing the mileage to justify a diesel then you are much better off with a low mileage 1.6 FSI rather than spending the same money (or even more) on a high mileage diesel.
