Streaming music

I'm trying to stream music to my tablet (4.0) from my desktop pc, I'm using ES File explorer, playing back songs works fine, but it's not practical to explore to an individual song, I have several .m3u format playlists on the desktop however none of the players I've used on android likes that format.

Anyone suggest a player / playlist format to get the job done?

Sounds like you're doing it via the filesystem, I'd suggest you try DLNA instead. Use something like windows media player or Foobar2000 to host a DLNA server, then anyone on your LAN will be able to stream its library.

Something like this on the tablet will sort you out:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.twoplay.twoplayer&hl=en

The other option, a better one IMO, is Google Music.
