1000EUR Gaming PC+ Monitor+Periphals

Hi All

I've been using a battered laptop for the bones of 4 years. Now that I've a bit of cash and the inclination, I'd like to make a stab at getting hold of a PC that can do all I need to do well. Which is music, movies and gaming (anything that can easily handle the likes of Skyrim, BF3 etc).

I guess I don't need major performance, just something respectable. Therefore if this can be underbudget all the better.

Having looked through this forum its pretty clear that the best bang for buck will be gotten from building my own rig, and that's the main driver behind this.

So to the facts:"

1. What is your budget? €1000

2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Leisure and gaming; Skyrim, BF3, Arkam city

3. Do you need a copy of Windows? Yes

4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? No

5. Do you need a monitor? Yes

5a. If yes, what size do you need. 20'-22'


6. Do you need any of these peripherals? Yes: Keyboard, Mouse, Wireless, Card Reader

7. Are you willing to try overclocking? No

8. How can you pay? Bank Transfer/Credit Card/Laser

9. When are you purchasing? Anytime (say 2 weeks?)

10. If you need help building it, where are you based? Not sure if I need help. If it is doable by a n00b, then I'd be happy to give it a bash.

I'm still rather daunted by the process of building what with the amounts of things I need/should know and the potential pitfalls. So any advice you have will be very, very much appreciated.

That's a good mid range graphics card. You could spend another €100 to go to the high end 7950 if you wanted.

What monitor are you using?

Oops, forgot to add that I needed a monitor in the first post! Thinking something in the 20-22" range

In terms of graphics card, take it that I'll only get the benefit of a higher range card if I have a higher end monitor?

The stand is a big flimsy by all accounts, but this is an otherwise very good 23" IPS panel that would still come in on budget combined with Bloodbaths build.

How powerful a graphics card you need depends on the resolution of the monitor, the HD7850 as per above would be a good companion for a 1080p monitor, although if you can stretch a bit higher to say a HD7870 that would be even better again (Although the 7850 has probably got the better price/performance ratio).

Anything more powerful is probably overkill for 1080p at the moment.

Thanks for all the input guys. I think I'll largely go with whats been recommended, perhaps with just two changes:
1. Windows 7 instead of Windows 8
2. A smaller hard drive. 2TB would be overkill for me, especially with the SSD on there aswell.

Good change. I prefer 7 myself.

I just recommend 8 as it's the latest and does perform better in some areas and has crazy boot times with a fast ssd. Under 5 seconds from turning on the power is pretty insane.

You can configure it to look 7 if you want.

You could drop to a 60gb ssd as well if you wanted to save more. I use a 60gb myself for windows and all non game programs. I have quite a lot of stuff installed and still have 32gb free. Once you disable hibernation and reduce virtual memory down to 2-3gb's windows uses feck all. I'd only get larger drives if you wanted to install some games on the ssd.
