Should we have "E plates"?

As the thread title says, should we have "E plates"? In Ireland, we currently have "L plates" and "R plates" in some jurisdictions. I think we should have an extended test, which is optional, this will entitle the bearer of such license to "E plates", standing for "Expert". This will entitle the bearer to the old blood alcohol level of 0.08, it will also allow the bearer to go 20 kph above the speed limit on dual carriageways and be exempt from the speed limit on the motorway (except where speed limits are in place due to roadworks etc.). Other Roads will still have the mandatory speed limit in place.

These "E plates" will cost 50 Euro and the "E test" will cost a further 50 squids. More money for the government and an extra revenue source to be put into our roads.

So what do y'all think boardsies?

A Friday thread on Monday, I like your thinking!

Should have posted it in Motors or even better in Learning to Drive

I've stuck GB plates on my car to signify that I'm 'Getting Better' at driving.:)

I think they should get a VIP lane as well

    Paradox.

Anyone with the capability to pass an expert driving test wouldn't drive after drinking (or while at all compromised) or exceed the posted speed limit.

I think those who stick their L plates crooked or otherwise on their bonnet should fail their test straight away.

Not another reason for penalty points i hope, bad idea OP

Sometimes I like to sit upstairs on the 46A at the front and pretend I am driving the bus. I also ask passengers coming up the stairs to the top deck where they are "off to" and charge fares that sound like they are made up, like €2.45.

I'm an amazing driver. You can tell because I break the speed limit all the time and use the horn a lot.

yes you can do an Advanced Driver test

IIRC it makes you insurance a bit cheaper, not sure if you get a badge afterwards

and no, no test will ever allow you to go above the speed limit, up North people with a full license are restricted to 45 mph regardless of which road they are on, for their first year driving

and there is an N plate for noob

    - anyone know the legal status of these ?

Or those who cut the L out of it to make it look less obvious.

Are they recognised by all the insurers though, sometimes, such as Aviva, you sit their own test, and reduction is dependent on how well you do.

AFAIK, there's nothing on your licence to say you have done it, unless the chip feature on the new licences have a space for it.

    E-plates?

    Don't tell Danny Healy Rae.

He'll want D-plates,for those 5 or 6 over the limit.

That's not a bad idea, charging tourists a 50 cent "upper deck supplement". You could also sell them a Metro Herald (only 20 cent) and spritzes of aftershave.

Since this was an AH thread, I naturally assumed that this was going to be an ageist thread. :D

Can we also get mandatory I Plates for Idiots who speed/drink drive? I think that would be more useful.

I think it's a genuinely hilarious idea. I can just imagine someone stumbling out of an E plate car telling the Garda 'Don't worry yourshelf Mr. Garda Man, sure I'm a feckin great driver altogether, I am.'

I dunno about now but I'd remembered years ago they used to have 'P' plates for people who have passed their driving test in the U.k but you can imagine we used call it something else! Lol.
