What's so mad about it? Seems a fairly obvious thing to do.

A bit of context would be the way to go.
Not everyone will go chasing links, we have probably read anyway checking the news today
    Wht do you think?
Do you sunbathe naked? And fear a schlong tax?
Posting links should support your idea, not be the idea.

Aerial maps and GPS-style systems will measure "the distance from each property to a series of amenities and services".

These will include train and Luas lines, airports, health services, schools, shops and emergency services such as garda stations.

Seems fair to me, if you have better access to these amenities then you should pay more than people who have to travel to them.

Seems like the Govt. are using their noodle for once!

Although, didn't they just have a census?

Makes sense tbh, seems a fair way of assessing one of the variables when it comes to valuing a house.

The pissy mattress and burnt out car in my driveway should help with my valuation

Probably just Phil Hogan's threat of the week at work. Ever since he decided to bring in this tax he has been threatening the people of Ireland and coaxing them into paying up.

    I wish they did!
Will the prosperity tax be ring fenced to local services (like potholes and road linings) or will it be used for everything but?

So it's Dublin^2 tax, if you live in dublin you get hit for higher property prices and hit again because you live closer to facilities. why not go the whole hog and just call it the Dublin tax.

Imo it should be 50% on value and 50% on size.

4.3kWp South facing PV System. South Dublin

Im going to piss on your parade for a sec

Are you aware that there is facilities outside of dublin?

They should scrap the bloody thing altogether

It has nothing to do with local services as councils owning council houses have to pay it to the central government. They have to say it's for local services to entice people into paying but then what is all the other tax for? Funding the Dail itself?

Dublin has better amenities than other parts of the country so it's fair they should pay more imo

Just goes to show whatever the Government do now, they are finished.

How did the country ever arrive at this sorry state?

What if shops amenities etc that are located close to your home are considered "good" but you hate them?

Do you still have to pay a higher tax rate?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,681 ✭✭✭✭P_1

Quick question how do they know you own the home?

I'd say they have built up a substantial register now based on who's signed up for the €100 charge. Wouldn't surprise me to see them go to the banks to find out who has mortgages and all that.

If everyone hated them they would be gone out of business.

Cover your house with a big net or tarp. Then they won't be able to see it from the sky. Property tax = 0.

Except the aerial photography has already been used to create a database of existing commercial and residential properties.

Also, the census data was used to create the deprivation index mentioned in the OPs link.

The Independent keeps using the word "sophisticated", yet it's really fairly simple geographical analysis been used. In fact many government decisions are based on such techniques.

    Non story!

A slight worry is that the Property Tax is supposed to pay for amenities that are paid for out of the government purse, why should proximity to amenities that are paid for from private funds come into it?
