The IRFU was founded in 1874.

I don't really understand what you mean by the purpose of bringing rugby over to Ireland, but I can tell you that some historians believe rugby evolved from Gaelic football - the founder of the game, William Webb Ellis, holidayed in Ireland as a youth.

A bit of homework help?? :pac:

The IRFU was founded in 1879. Not long after the first union was founded (the RFU in 1871). See - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRFU

Presumably the founding roots of rugby in Ireland were because we were a British Colony, and their sport traveled with them. There was a large unionist / prodisdent population in Ireland at the time, roughly a third. See West Indies / Pakistan / Australia / New Zealand for cricket etc. as well, English sports were integrated into local society everywhere they went.

As for the last point, it depends on who you ask, rugby culture is virtually identical in all provinces, there are mainly fee paying private schools that have traditionally been a hub for rugby and their are numerous public clubs that other parts of the community join / play in.

If you ask someone from Munster though, they'll tell you that only working class hero's play the tans sport in Munster, and only so we can beat them at it any way, we don't even like it, but we invented it so there! :pac:

Point of information - at the time rugby came about we weren't a colony, we were part of the country that is the UK.

If you go down to your local library you should be able to find a good book on Irish rugby and its origins.
