Started a new job this week and today in I'm in bits with the flu and felt like collapsing in work, never been as sick. Don't want to be calling in sick on my second day. Would a naggin worth or 350 ml do the job of hot whiskey? Rather be a bit hungover than dying with the flu.

Good dose of whiskey, (poitin better if you can get it), boiling water and STRAIGHT TO BED IMMEDIATELY ONCE YOU DRINK IT.

Taking it any other way and your wasting your time.

Grab loads of Lemons oranges grapefruit limes and whatever citrus fruit you can get your hands on

Lightly boil it up with cloves cinnemon and honey

Mix either paracetemol or your booze into it and rest in bed for about 24hrs

    Works for me

The body isnt very tolerant of paracetamol overdose.

Anytime I feel a cold developing I begin taking cloves of garlic with water. Just cut them up and knock back quickly. Then I mix a bit of hot water with whiskey, lemon, honey and some cloves. Take this a few times once I feel symptoms and I haven't had anything develop in years. Can't even remember the last time I had a cold.

Black rum is the best, doesn't effect your heart rate as much as whiskey so you sleep better

    Do they work?

I'm not sure. Let me call my friend Claire Daly and ask her.

Just go to the chemist and pick up a cold and flu remedy, nurofen cold and flu or benylin 4flu are easy to take as they're in tablet form. If you insist on lemsip get the lemsip extra as it has added ingredient to ease congestion (but you can't take with it with the tablets mentioned above, they're essentially the same stuff). Don't be afraid to ask your pharmacist for advice. Anyway, they should help you get through the day and if you really can't handle it explain the situation to your boss and go see a doctor.

Nothing does anything to shorten or cure a cold or flu. But a hot whiskey or cold/flu remedy makes you feel a bit better so why not. Good placebo effect too.

I was told by an ex-nurse that only two things work for a cold or flu, one on the virus, the other on its symptoms.

A hot toddy works on relieving symptoms because alcohol dries up the mucus membrances, relieving stuffiness.

The only thing that actually aids in beating a cold or flu is to raise your body temperature (this why your body temperature rises naturally with flu or fever, to reach a level that will kill off the virus). So either multiple layers of clothes or get under the duvet.

Her take on it was whether it's pharmacy medicine or alternative medicine, unless your defenses are low due to bad diet or underlying illness, you're pretty much píssing money away on stuff that doesn't work. A nip of firewater and sweating it out. Sweating it out in particular will shorten the length of time you're sick and nothing else will have any effect.

Irishman thinks getting drunk before is second day in a new job is the key to being a good employee :(.

Not to mention any misconceptions about how the immune system works and what the flu is/is not.

A load of Irish coffees do the trick.

My standard response to whiskey, vodka or gin questions is... Careful, the shot you're about to down may in fact be urine.. Man's urine.
