I am planning to buy a new VW Golf 7 2.0 TDI DSG for 2014.
Has anyone seen or driven one of these yet? I haven't seen on in any VW dealer or even on the road yet

I had a 2006 GTI DSG and loved it. I'm hoping the 150 BHP TDI will be somewhat like the GTI but, of course, with better economy.

I think the GT TDI will be closer to the GTI - should be just north of 170bhp and if it is anything like the Mark VI then it should look better

I was looking into a manual recently. Couldn't get a 2 litre to try out as I wasn't interested in the 1.6 as it's incredibly slow. You'll be paying well north of 30k for one, I was quoted 35k almost for a manual 3 door with a few options and then the can't say it was worth it.

Get the 2.0 tdi GTD version. 170 bhp and looks stunning IMO.

I think it's going to be 181bhp in the GTD, plus in a lighter car.

The price will be stunning too I'd say :) but it should be a fab car.
When is it due in the showrooms?

GTD will be up to 184 PS. Not far off the 200 PS in a Mk5 GTI. Although, the GTI is getting a bit of a power boost for the Mk7 model too, up to at least 220. If it were me I'd be having the petrol every time, especially as the new model will be efficient enough to be in tax band B2!

Probably a year or more before the GTi & GTD are released though?

What's your annual mileage? My default option would be a petrol...

About 8-10,000 k. A petrol is cheaper but I believe there are reliability issues with the 7-speed DSG unit used in the petrol engined 1.4 Golf that are well flagged elsewhere on various motoring forums.

Also, I once had a 170 ps 1.4 TSI Jetta (2008) and it was difficult to get a reasonable trade-in allowance. Hence my choice is diesel...more costly up-front but better in the long-term, hopefully

The current 1.4 is a new engine. It doesn't have a supercharger and is belt driven.

But the 7 speed DSG (used in 1.4 petrol) is what I want to avoid. The 6-speed used in the 2.0 diesel is supposed to be far less troublesome.

I have no problem with the new 1.4 petrol engine. It's supposed to be a nicer drive than the 2.0 diesel.

10k km? You might think you'll get away with it, but DPF and DMF problems can wipe out any savings you might get with the diesel.

I haven't read about DSG 7 problems, do you have links?

If your preference is a petrol then why not buy an older 6 speed DSG with a savage spec (for less).

The GTI is a far better proposition than a TDI no matter how many G,T's or D's it has on the back :D

To be honest, I'm intending to have one last new car while I can afford it, so an older 6-speed DSG wouldn't interest me. I did have a 2006 GTI DSG which was great though.

A new GTI is just a bit too expensive now and I really don't want to spend that much. I have a 2011 Jetta 1.6 TDI currently and while it's boring to drive, the residual is pretty good so a new Golf 2.0 TDI DSG next year will probably be my last new affordable car. The plan is to hold it for many years as my annual mileage is low.

The problem is though (as others have said) is that modern diesels are meant to be driven and with that low mileage you're talking about, you're opening yourself to very expensive issues - especially if you plan to hold on to the car for a while.

Your money of course but I think the advice about petrols is worth considering under the circumstances

Yeah, that makes sense alright. My driving is about 80% urban and I may have to rethink my plan in light of what you say. I hadn't thought of the long-term issues with diesel & low mileage. The dealers seldom tell you those things :)

If the 7-speed DSG issues I highlighted earlier were fixed in a year's time, I would give serious though to the 140ps 1.4 Petrol Golf DSG.

Whatever I get will definitely be a DSG though. I'm tired of manual and the 1.6 Jetta TDI needs a lot of gear-shifting to keep it nudged along :-(

Thanks for the advice, by the way. Great source of info, this forum!

Yea the DSG is great. I have a 6-speed version in my 06 2.0 TDI Passat and couldn't ever go back to a manual (this is my 4th auto).

Lucky fior me my taste in cars is such that auto is either readily available or the default option (now if I could just get a car that had ALL the spec I want in it) :)
