€60,000 for Dole Office Logo

Looks like Intreo is the new name for the dole and this is their new logo.

    http://www.newstalk.ie/Is-the-new-dole-office-logo-worth-60000

A boring green circle with the word INTREO written on it.

I wonder if they considered asking anyone on their own books to come up with a design for an extra months dole?

Surely out of 450,000 people (some of the them graphic designers no doubt) they could have found something a lot more imaginative for a hell of a lot less.

It seems like these out of touch public servants still thing nothing of píssing away our hard earned taxes.

Selling to the public sector is usually one of the best things you can do as a service provider.

Usually means high margins for all concerned.

Surely there is more to it than just a logo and 60 K .

I generally lean right of centre on most issues and can understand and someties defend certain public expenditure but this is just unbelieveably idiotic.

I could have knocked that up myself in photoshop in an hour

Creating a brand is an expensive endeavor.

Should of just gotten someone's nephew to do it, I heard he's good at that photoshop thing.

The name Intreo is derived from both the abbreviation of the word Introduction and Treo, the Irish for direction. The final identity solution combines a positive upward arrow symbol and circle representing the individuals and service users who are ultimately Intreo’s brand ambassadors.

Which means a load of shite

It is brilliant and will be a boost to the people signing on. They will skip down to the dole office now happy to see this sign. Shame more public sector departments can't use this forward thinking. All the old stationary needs to be changed now too which means jobs for 1 stationary company from the uk.

    Here's what they should do:

1: Go to national college of art and design or similar design school
2: Tell all students there they are accepting submissions for (whatever government dept)
    3: Winning design gets €1000

I defy you to find me a student that wouldn't jump at that opportunity.

I presume this pays for the materials and signage as well? Not just the design.

Wonder does the government need any more logos done (looks up logo design software) I'll do them for 60k each

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

The trouble with doing that is that it probably breaks some EU law about tendering.

Crappy situation but that's the way it works

In fairness the 60K probably involved multiple designs, colour testing, focus groups etc.

€60,000 is still a lot, but I doubt it was for an hour's work in Photoshop.

I think and i could be wrong they are making fas into what the UK did like the Job Centre you will sign on at th FAS office and have to speak to someone about what jobs etc you applied for etc. If this is the case then its no good as there is no jobs

A new logo for the Euro coinage a while back consisted of a stick figure, like that drawn by a 3 year old. Graphic designers don't even try anymore.

    From the DSP site.

Intreo is a new service from the Department of Social Protection. Intreo is a single point of contact for all employment and income supports

Yup as i said you will sign on at Intreo (ex fas) in future my query is my local FAS office is tiny they might need a bigger place as the queue to sign on down here is massive.

That means not only 60k for new signs but brand new offices for this project we are looking at a bill into the millions here never mind the 60k

    True.

And while one person in photoshop could have done this logo in an evening that's not what happened. The Dole office aren't going to hire some kid of the street that says he can use photoshop. They're going to hire a large expensive advertising company with a track record.

So somebody on the dole is now A Brand Ambassador-wtf!!?

"What's the story with my dole being cut off"?....."Well sir,you are now a Brand Ambassador and therefore classed as being in employment, every time you sign on or go to collect your dole, you are technically working".

I'm not sure about that. You'll get some people complaining sure, but I think most would support such a cooperation between a government agency and third level art college if it meant saving taxpayers money and rewarding students.

I wouldn't be in favour of the private sector being allowed to do this but I don't see a problem with the public service liaising with schools and colleges in this way.

This is something that could work and work well. However people love a moan and I guarantee some would complain.

I once spent 15k on branding for a retail outlet. Im sure there is more to it that one logo.

60k in this instance could very well be value for money. Re-reading the story on newstalk, it's cheap and lazy on their behalf. The same tripe that we have to put up with from some independents / opposition parties.

Its lifted from the Daily Mail so there's a sensationalist health warning there to begin with.

If the 60K covers all stationery, signage, office displays etc nationwide then it is money well spent. Incredible value in fact.

However, if it simply pays for the logo, and is sold to us with crap like this -

    Creative Rationale
The name Intreo is derived from both the abbreviation of the word Introduction and Treo, the Irish for direction. The final identity solution combines a positive upward arrow symbol and circle representing the individuals and service users who are ultimately Intreo’s brand ambassadors.

    - then I think, someone in the DSP has questions to answer, and maybe The Daily Mail (and Newstalk) have a point.

The logo looks like some stupid start-up from America that deals with social networking or something....

If anyone from "Intreo" is reading this thread, do this:

    1) Copy the following into a blank Microsoft Word Document (Any version...hell, you could even use Libre/Open Office if you want): Intreo
    2) Highlight it all and increase to size....72 and change the font to Wingdings.
    3) ???
    4) Profit.

It should look something like this once you are done: Click Here - Now, just use that as your new heading on your letters and compliments slip. If anyone asks why you chose this one, just say "Well, it was either this or €60K on a crappy green circle"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭Frank Bullitt

Lots of experts on here it seems.

Its not 60k for a logo, its 60k for a brand. Like most things Irish people will criticize anything that costs money, even more so when it's something that they don't understand or see a point of, good design is one of them things.
I could have knocked that up myself in photoshop in an hour

No, you couldn't have. A branding operation is more than a logo and also requires a skill that extends beyond the realms of photoshop. This type of attitude really pisses me off.
