How long to change registration/ownership

Bought a second-hand car on Saturday February 9th from a dealer. Have it NCTed and insured, with the appropriate bits of paper in the corner of the windscreen. However, it's not taxed yet. I have the money ready to pay for the year (old rate), but nothing has arrived through the post yet and motortax.ie doesn't recognise my details for the car yet.

Can dealers perform this change online nowadays? How long should this normally take?

I had the same problem a couple of months ago - heard nothing for over 2 weeks so I contacted the dealer. The change was showing up on motortax.ie the following day and I received the VLC a couple of days later.

Some dealers are also very slow to change over. My OH was waiting nearly two months before anything was done, and it was only done after swearing an affidavit and sending a form off to Shannon.

And that's exactly what I don't want; a long delay. I have the money right now, don't want the hassle from the Gardai if they do manage to notice me. I'm also refraining from parking in public spaces as I don't want an overzealous warden handing out a ticket for non-display.

I was in the same situation to you OP not long ago.
You can head into your local motor tax office to tax it, or there is a form you can fill in with all your required details and that way you can tax it.
This form will take an age to be processed. I had no choice but to use the form as neither myself or my wife where able to take time off work to tax the car.
