EGR valve clogged

    Hi.

After a recent service I've been told that my EGR valve is clogged up.

The advice I received from the garage was to throw some depetane into the tank, and then basically 'drive the hell outta the car'.

The car got a good drive yesterday, 120 miles or so, kept it low gear with high rev, the warning light reappeared though, and emissions garage warning on the dash cane back.

Mechanic reckoned that sounded normal, hopefully the valve has now unclogged itself, and he said he could turn the light back off with the diagnostic software.

The car is a 06 tdi passat

Anyone a rough idea the price of these valves, and also do you know who the manufacturers of the valve would be (valeo/wabco etc) as I might be able to source through my own job.

    Thanks

I don't know anything about the EGR valve on VW engines but I had a clogged valve on a TiD Saab I owned last year. I took it off and cleaned it out with petrol and a tooth brush. I'd imagine the one in a VW engine is pretty similar in construction and I don't see how diptaine can clear it.

If I were you I'd take the car to a mechanic and ask him to take the valve off and clean it properly and the reset the engine light (if need be, mine went out itself after I cleaned and refitted the valve)

Mechanic sounds like a total moron tbh. Surely he could have removed the EGR valve and cleaned it while charging you the labour for the job?

    I could be wrong though.

Just take it off and clean it out with carb cleaner or petrol with a toothbrush
They are just a vacuum operated valve .
Then take it for a good hard drive

Are you sure he wasn't referring to the DPF?

Driving the hell out of a car won't clean a dpf either

Had a similar problem with my TiD Saab 93, had my mechanic clean it at last service and it made a noticeable difference (more power, no CEL).. It's a DIY job if you have the time and the tools, not sure how similar the location etc is on a Paasat but here is a good guide for starters

Did my own EGR in the Mondeo there 2 years ago, cost me 50 euro from Traynors and I put it in myself. Not a bother since :D

Would driving the lard out of the car clean this?

I think not. Get it took off and cleaned :)

Bring it to somewhere that bypasses them, less hassle and from what I can make out it'll save you more hassle in the future. Same with the DPF, they are only a €1500 things that is designed to go wrong.

I did my own EGR on the avensis this time last year. Took it off with the help of a you tube video, cleaned it with carb cleaner and there's not been a problem since. Seriously worth taking a go yourself, not a lot to it.

    Cheers for the saab link.

My 2007 9-3 (150bhp) tid seems to be suffering from this now. The dpf gave trouble last August, but a good drive on the motorway seemed to remedy it.

Then yesterday it crawled to a halt, and diagnostics picked up manifold pressure and egr issues. It had to be towed, so hopefully the garage it's at now will go down the route of cleaning rather than replacement.

Anyone here get rid of the dpf and remap the computer? Does it work in the long term, and any issues with nct?

Our mechanic has done the bypass in his own vectra, pm me if you want his contact! He is great and economic, I wouldn't trust anyone else, have had too many issues in the past.
