Could be an Allard. That's just a guess though.

I Googled the 1954 Le Mans listing, and from this I got a "Gordini T24S" for number 40. From Google images, I think it looks very like the bodywork on a few of the models.

yes but that is where they finished not the car no. car no 40 in 53 is a frazer nash and in 54 is a porsche 550 neither of which is our mystery car.
