The security numbers on the the top right hand corner of the screen used to be there only occasionally and only for premier league matches. Now they're there constantly on all channels since score the weekend.

Is that happening to anyone else? Is it now a permanent feature?

This happened me last year also. I ended up having to ring Sky to get rid of them.

I might have had a thread here about it at the time so I'll have a search now and I'll post a link to it if I find it.

Edit/ The thread is here but nothing to see Im afraid

Looks like I'll have to ring them so. Does anyone know if its something sky turn on and off or is it in the boxes software to do this occasionally?

It's a 2TB box and its quite buggy.

Try turning the sky box off and pull the plug for a few mins. Then restart. Worked for me a few months ago

Sky turn on the numbers usually during Premier League matches. Sky sends "agents" into pubs etc to check the numbers. It is to stop a private home sub being used in a pub.

    and online streaming.

It is not your viewing card number.

From Sky: This is not related to your individual subscription and is generated automatically as part of the broadcast. It will not affect your viewing experience in any way.

Ye it''s used to track down online streaming afaik. Don't pubs have/used to have a pint icon in the corner to show it was a pub license?

They really only need to put the number on the screen randomly for 3-4 seconds and they'd be able to track down the viewing card. I have noticed it on more then usual recently but doesn't really bother me.

Yeah, the number that was stuck on my screen for a couple of days definitely was not the card number nor the account number as I checked both at the time.

Nothing to do with streaming. People streaming dont use Sky boxes.

Its to catch domestic subs being used in a commercial setting.

and its the viewing card number scrambled and its a pain. to get round it when a game is on press pause for 15 secs and then it will not appear.

? Pointing a camera at a screen ? Thats the only way that could be done with a proprietary Sky box which would be quiet silly.

Non proprietary boxes are used by those streaming illegally. In most cases the sources of the streams are either via ill gotten means anyhow and by those without even valid subs or for those that do, through a reencoded SkyGo stream.

To get back to the reasoning. Its a domestic security check. The ID checks can only be necessary for domestic cards wrongly used in a commercial environment, a pub etc. By all accounts it is the account card number rejigged into an algorithm easily checked by Sky.

Its been going on ages. It started on Sky Italia initially as pubs were using Sky Italia domestic cards in UK commercial pubs which is against the T&C of the card issued. Those checks didnt work as the boxes used wouldnt behave like Sky boxes in displaying the card no, so Sky resorted to dropping the English language stream on Sky Italia much to the annoyance of ex-pats living there and the italians themselves.

To get rid of it press pause for a few secs.
