I dont know if I like the later series. The more expensive cars dont need alot of mechanical work.
The xk jag looked like a complete set up. Owner selling it cheap cause it was going into limp mode. Im sure he would have spent a few quid fixing it.

Yeah theyve been running ads on discovery the last week or two.

Id much prefer normal everyday cars to be done tvh

I agree, wheeler dealering on a 15k car isnt as relatable as doing it on a 2k car (to me). I'll still watch it though, just to see parts come apart.

Car mechanics have a project car in the go all the time . Usually runs for about 6 issues iirc . At the minute its a laguna II tourer. Personally I find that more interesting than 15 - 20k cars that people realistically wouldnt be wheeler dealering themselves.

I still watch wheeler dealers all the time though.

Another program along the lines of the garage would be good aswell.

They are doing a programme on a Ford Escort Mexico MkI this series I think. Proper car.

    Agree 1000%

Well, as good as Ed China is, the whole aspect of wheeler dealers - flip cars for a profit - is actually a failure when you take into account the labor costs which are omitted each and every time they work on a car.
Apart from that, as above, I would be much more interested in cheaper cars being sorted out, aka Bangernomics style.

They don't include labour costs, since the labour is supposed to be your own.

Exactly. The whole point is your doing the work yourself. Buy a car with a few issues cheap, do the work on the driveway and sell on for the full value. If youve to start have loads of jpbs done at 50-80 quid an hour youll be doing well to make money on anything.

Exactly and they do include labour whenever ed has get a specialist in such as windscreen fitters or spray painter etc.

True, I never thought of it that way. I suppose the reason is because I could never do any of that work myself, nor do have any of the tools.

Looking forward to the new series.

Dont take it too seriously, its a bit of a setup. Cars are often sold to the crew's relations/friends rather than actually advertisiing them and they do more work than they say they do. One episode, think it might have been an old TVR, showed a nice shiny new set of discs and pads on the car and it was never mentioned in the show.

For some reason I prefer watching wheeler dealers from the comfort of my sofa to lying on the ground under my car with the wind blowing the Haynes manual away. Go figure.

    Apparently not!

Just watched it there. It's great hangover tv!
Not liking the montage of work at the end, but a good show. What I wouldn't give for a db7 for a month or two.

    No :D

got a bit silly there in the db7 episode when the really expensive tracking tool was used and not included in the expenses

i am a fan though, it is reality tv so who really cares about the silly stuff!:P

    great job on those alloys!

But he did keep making the point he had this expensive tool in his garage. Where most people wouldnt

Just bumping this thread to remind folks that there is a new series of Wheeler Dealers starting tonight at 9 on Discovery.

First up is the Lambo Urraco:

More scripted, shouty, sh1te. Yea like we're all going to be buying Lamborghinnis off Donedeal. I think WD has ran its course.

These guys are from an industry. Expecting them to have degrees in drama or performance is silly. I say that as giving off about scripted stuff when links between Eds hard graft is silly as the links are needed so they need a script. And good on them, alright it's okay at best when Mike does his usual routine of "you have done nothing since i dropped it in" or when they dressed up all posh or try ad do a top gear race around a track for the one or two minutes they have to fill. At least they are trying to make it a bit entertaining.

Good too that they do some expensive cars. Not least as its cool to see them fixed up but I'd say we would get bored at run of the mill cars for every episode of a season.

Sometimes Mike is a muppet, but do we really see many car dealers who don't act even slightly muppetish? The Channel 4/More 4 Dealers program shows some diabolical idiots selling people cars.

Ed has really adapted to his role very very well if you look and old vs. new series. I have a feeling if he didnt there would be complaints aswell.

I have loved Wheeler Dealers for years. You must remember that although Mike comes out with some annoying sh!te, he is paid to be somewhat animated like that. There are things that annoy me about the show such as "it loks the same as when I dropped it off", "I've just bought a *insert car here*, what have I done" and my most hated one where he says "I'm not going to do that" etc.

I also hate the way you can tell what he will sell a car for e.g. if he says he'll advertise it for 4000, he'll end up taking 3850 or something like that. The only car that surprised me was the DeLorean where he got more than he asked for.

I still love the show though :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 585 ✭✭✭NobodyImportant

Yea but they never factor in the labour :D ha ha ha!

Thanks for the heads up, its a good show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,310 ✭✭✭Harcrid

Anyone who does not like the over the top Mike now should look back at him when he first started on TV. Boring and wooden with pants half way up his chest. While he can be annoying now it's better than before! Wheeler dealers is my favourite TV show once you ignore the scripted stuff. The search and viewing of the cars and Ed's mechanical work is all I am interested in.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,272 ✭✭✭✭Max Power1

Yeah I think we all accept the prices and "must make a profit on this moaataarrr" is all BS.
What I find interesting is the work on rare and interesting cars, like say the DB7 episode. Cars that I may not get to own but still dream of, and will not get a chance to see up close and personal again getting restored.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 556 ✭✭✭Carson10

prefered the show the Mike done a few years ago, when he'd go to someone who couldnt sell their car and he'd take it and do it up, polish, valet , new wheels etc...Prefer the more everyday stuff.

Deals on wheels is about 10-12 years old at this stage.

Wheeler Dealers is a quality show, love it.

Carson was talking about "the show Mike did years ago", not Ed ;)

Autotrader was fairly good too but it focused more on the sale of cars rather than the restoration of them. It's easy to see why AutoTrader was dropped and WD continued.

wheeler dealers is a good show, edd china is a top man but that idiot brewer god almighty i cannot stand him, whenever that idiot speaks i mute the tv,he'd be up around the top of my all time hates along with bbc f1 and fifth gear, but back to the point,GET RID OF BREWER!!!!!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,188 ✭✭✭cletus

Mike's schtick annoys me, so I just record it and watch later, that way I can fast forward through his "negotiations" at the start and end.

Really, the initial cost and the resale price matter very little to me, similarly the whole "He didnt factor in the labour". I watch the show soley for Ed China's work

no...it's where two teams buy two cars and break them to see who can make the most money. The last episode they broke a Herald and an Anglia 105E, before that a Reliant and also a Prius. On Sky somewhere

I love it - yeah your man Mike is a bit of a tool but Ed China makes the show - he introduced TerraClean to me too which I'm getting done with the C5 in 10 days.

PS: My favourite episode is when they did the gun metal grey Range Rover (one with the blue hood and interior changed to plastic dipped carbon finish).

    A £27000 Lamborghini ......... not really a Joe Soap car !!

I enjoyed the show to be honest.

Thought Mike was more subdued than usual, no "You've done nothing since I left you" etc.

To see Ed drop the engine and replace the clutch and the cam belt etc on that car I thought was quite special and well worth watching! THought it was interesting about the threads on the clutch fluid pipe too.

Couldnt help but think that the way they cleaned up the brake discs was a bit of a bodge, especially on a car like that, but I guess they didnt really have a choice.
