My shooting buddy had a customised remy 700 Varmint in 223, with heavy 1:12 twist barrel. Extreme accuracy with 55gr ammo. Popped rabbits regularly at 170-180 yds with Remy UMC FMJ 55gr cheap fodder from field positions. his rig was tricked-out to the nth degree - Maj Plaster stock, Leupold Mk IV mounts and scope, trigger job, crown job, moderated. He used Remy ballistic tip 55gr for anything bigger than a rabbit.

The cdl also has 1:12 twist barrel and will work well with ammo up to 55gr. It will shoot heavier ammo, too but best results with 55gr and under.

    Hi Noel,

Your rifle could be 1 of a few twists. I printed off a chart one time for various calibres and for .223 it says---

    1 in 14"--- 50-55grain
    1 in 12"--- 55-60grain
    1 in 10"--- 60-65grain
    1 in 9"--- 65-75grain
    1 in 8"--- 75-80grain
    1 in 7"--- 80+Grain

It might not be exact but it's a guideline for you anyway.

Pretty sure these are maximum bullets weights recommended for the various twists.

If nothing stamped on the barrel, it's most likely a 1:12.

Looked the cdl up on net, says 1:12, 24" barrel.

    Nice rifle.

    Ya that's what they are.

    It's a beauty of a rifle.

thanks for the help i think it is the 1;12 twist there is no markings on the barrel but i was looking on the remington websight they say they only sell it in a left handed gun but i think they should be the same twist ..

I'd take the list with a bucket of salt tbh..

1in12's shoot 40-55gr perfectly target and varmint..

1in8 shooting 50grains will put 3 rounds into a cent coin.

Its a little tight that list.

Ya I completely agree, I've seen friends if mines rifles shoot very well with different weights. I suppose if you have a fast twist it will be good with all weights but if you have a slower twist it won't stabilise the bullets.
