I took a very tidy '05 Civic type S 5 door hatchback out for a test drive this evening & must admit am tempted to pull the trigger on it next week assuming a deal can be done.

Would be very interested to hear anyone's experiences if they've had one.

    Thanks!

Faultless would be a good description.

Good power, handles well. All the controls are light and easy.

The neighbor has one from New never got any problems

Look for rust where the roof meets the windscreen if it hasn't the glass roof.

Also bloody amazing brakes. Someone should tell them they need to obey the laws of physics.

They are far from faultless. they give gearbox trouble and the electric power steering also gives trouble in them which can be expensive to put right.

If you want a Civic of that vintage go for the saloon version. it is Jap built and has hydraulic power steering which doesn't give trouble and they have better gearboxes as well.

The EP Civics never had a glass roof

Are they 1.4 or 1.6? The gearbox in the 1.4 is nown for bearing failures.

In petrol form they come in 1.4 sohc, 1.6 sohc vtec and 2.0 dohc i-vtec.

    But he's looking at a type S?

Its not a basic old model 1.4 S is it?

The Type-S from 06+ was a 1.8l i-Vtec with the panoramic roof. I would guess the OP is looking at the older model in 1.4l format.

Weather it's 1.4 type s, 1.6 type s vtec or the top of the range 2.0 i-vtec sport, none ever came with a glass roof. No EP model civic from 00-05 came with one.

Was there an ep3 type s? Must say I've never heard of one before now.

Yes one of those. They're probably all UK imports though..I can't imagine them being sold here.

In Ireland (in 3dr form anyway) the type s never came in 1.4 as I said earlier..instead it came with the 1.6 vtec engine and gained side skirts, alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, and a nicer interior...etc over the 1.4i model.

Cannot imagine why any dealer would want to import a 2.0 litre non Type R Civic. Pretty much sale proof imo and certainly so at that price for a 10 year old one.

    +1

Never seen a 5 door one myself.
The GF bought an 04 one brand new and only sold it in December 2009. Great car, never any issues once serviced properly.

Thanks for the feedback, it is indeed a UK import, a 5-door 2.0 type S, price is similar to the one linked above although it's two years newer albeit with similar mileage. Didn't realise that version was never sold here. Due to the tax bill, I'm about to retire (read scrap :() my bmw 328i and wanted to get a reasonably nippy hatch to tide me over 'til a '08+ 330i falls into my budget, probably around two years or so. The Civic looks to fit the bill but would be open to any other suggestions.

So just to bring closure to the thread, I decided to go for the Civic, handed in a deposit today & will collect the car at the start of March. Came across two fairly positive reviews here & here which along with my own test drive convinced me it would be grand for a few years.

No doubt will take a while to adjust from the low down push of my old 328i to the high-revving vtec honda but I'm sure will get used to it :)

Didn't know you had a 328 before hand, the civic will be slower even at high revs. Remember, this is Hondas toned down version of vtec, it is a single overhead cam with 110bhp.

Enjoy the new car though :)

    It's a double over head cam 2.0 i vtec.

Agh right. I had the Irish version, SOHC with 110bhp, the 1.6 version.
Sorry OP, even better though :D

No pics I'm afraid as not collecting it 'til the start of March & the car is gone from carzone now as well but it's identical to this pic I found on the interwebs...

If it's the facelift Type-S (can out in 2004) then it'll have 16" alloys at standard, no sunroof, but cruise and VSA fitted. Indicators in the wing mirrors and few other tweaks, also climate control is in there.

The engine is lifted from the Accord, and yes, puts out 160ps (circa 158 BHP). In a car this size, it moves it pretty well and can deliver 40mpg.

This is not to be compared to the 1.4/1.6 of the EP range, it's a different beast under the hood and the suspension make up is stiffer than standard, but not Type-R territority.

Nice to drive, you'll enjoy it. I deliberated over this and an Accord 2.4 type-S estate as both are rare over here (never offically brought in by Honda to Ireland). Not a pocket rocket, but shifts none the less.

Correct, it's a K20 series engine, has all the VTC and VTEC stuff on board. It's torque output is pretty good for N/A given the efficiency. No mad VTEC switch over though, redline is about 6800 I think.

Chain-cam super reliable, we have the same engine in our Stream.

So collected the car yesterday & took it on its inaugural trip to the Ballycotton '10 road race today, so far so good, seems like a grand machine. Still getting to grips with toys like climate control, all new to me :) Pic is below...

Thanks for the feedback earlier in the tread, pretty much convinced me it was a good buy to keep me mobile for a few years.
