    How long is he/she going for?
    I found when mine went for a year getting a Skype acc helped and both setting aside a time to talk. I actually spoke more to my friend when she was away than when she's at home.
    It is hard but if you both make an effort it'll be worth it

    That's what he says too that we'll email and skype all the time but I don't know especially if it turns out he doesn't come back

    I know its really hard. treat it like a couple would. make skype dates, maybe arrange visits over. Friendships are no different to relationships, they require work and it will survive if you make it so.
