I've gotten great help on here in the past, so here goes...
I've been on the lookout for a nice family saloon of this vintage for a while and narrowed it down to these 3 cars. I've narrowed it down to these 3 having eliminated lots of others because of no service history, discrepancies in online checks, dealers posing as private sellers and hard-to-believe stories from owners

Having checked all I can online and over the phone, I'm viewing all 3 of these cars tomorrow. The Mazda 6 owner sent me more pics and it is spotless inside and out, with an almost full service history. The Passats have partial service history, and apparently both have had their timing belts done.

I've driven both models of car before, albeit a 1.6 Passat. Obviously you can tell i'm drawn to nice looking saloons with a few toys, but I still want a relatively easy life and wonder if the 1.8T wil be more hassle than it is worth.
The mazda 6 is a nicer car imo. It has a much better chassis with independent rear suspension and is a nicer drive. Just watch out for rust underneath and on the arches as this is a weak point in them.

If I was buying though id be getting a honda accord. They are a nicer car than the mazda imo.

    I can't agree more on that +1

Thanks lads. Leaning towards the Mazda alright, just a bit of a trek to go see it.
I'd prefer an Accord myself, but it would cost me a fair bit more to buy one with only 80k miles on the clock and to tax and insure it. Lovely car though.

More pictures of this seemingly to-good-to-be-true Mazda 6.

I've a 4 hour round trip to go see it, so if anyone sees anything untoward please advise me. Motorcheck report confirms the number of owners as 3 and the mileage up to 2011.

Obviously 1 deep scratch in the rear passenger-side door. I've no idea what this will cost to replace. I also suspect it will need at least 2 tyres, possibly brake pads and a service which will add a few hundred quid to the cost. I wasted a lot of time viewing one of these a few weeks ago before running a full check. It turned out it had 8 owners and 50 thousand vanished miles.

Looks clean, don't think it's too good to be true to be honest, that's about all they're worth thanks to the VW brained country we live in and the fear that a 1.8 engine is "massive" and "how could you run that yoke?".
Worth checking out. As I always say to people if you're going to spend small enough money on a car, you need to go to where the car is, not say "I'll spend no more than 1500 and the car can't be more than 20 minutes away". Recipe for a lemon!

Here is a year younger and higher spec Mazda 6 for similar money if you don't mind the bit of extra motor tax:
