VRT/Car Tax question

I'll try to keep this as brief as possible!

Imported a car from the north, vrt paid, number plates etc. They told me I have 30 days to NCT it and tax it, fair enough. The next day I booked it in for nct (just to get it out of the way) and it failed. Now I am fully insured on the vehicle, but because I failed nct, I cannot tax it. The car is booked in for a retest next week and tax will be paid then too. In the meantime, can I drive the car? If i'm stopped am I covered by the 30 days stated by the VRT people which explains no nct/tax?

    Thanks

Well your hands are pretty much tied, i'm sure you'd be fine to drive. (well, get away with it at least)

If youre pulled just explain the situation and say it will be back taxed once it passes and show them the nct report. You never know though, you might meet a Gard with a very low tolerance level.

Up to you if you want to take your chances or not!

You need a Valid NCT before you can tax an import?

Unfortunately so..I have the DOE cert from the north, but because its 'technically' a different vehicle now, an Irish NCT has to be carried out and that has to be submitted to motortax. Its all over the shop!

Have you tried going on to Motortax.ie and taxing it online? PIN will be the last 6 digits of the chassis number for first taxing.

i think you will be able to tax it for 3 months without the NCT

as for driving it, it's an offense to drive it on the road with no NCT and Tax. You can I believe drive it without an NCT to the test or to a garage for work to be done to pass the test but thats it.

Strange. I imported a car last week. Vrt'd it monday. Taxed it online wednesday night using the last 6 digits of the vin like R.O.R said above and there was no problem. It gave me the option of 3, 6 and 12 months tax but I only picked 3. Never tried 6 or 12 as my bank account wouldnt have liked it!!

There was no mention of any nct to me (04car) or any time limit to get it taxed. He just told me I would have to wait at least 24 to tax it as it wouldnt be on the system untill then.

He said I had 3 days to put my Irish plates up but I could do it straigh away if I wanted.

OP who told you that you need NCT to tax a car?
    That's not the case.

Also with this 1 month leeway to tax and NCT the car is not true.
There isn't such think. If you want to drive vehicle on public roads, you need both.

Legally you can't drive it to NCT centre, even for the purpose of the test.

Only what you can, is to drive it legally after NCT was conducted and failed. Then you can drive the car legally anywhere to the end of the day.
