Best new 2013 small automatic?

Don't worry its not for me!:p

I'm on the hunt for the best small automatic around for my mother. I'm thinking cars from fiesta to focus kind of size. The car will be a city car, will cover about 5000km a year, so it will have to be petrol, and the plan would be to keep it for 5 years or more.

So in short the requirements are as follows:
    Petrol
    Automatic
    5 door hatch
Low tax (could argue the point and get away from that tho...)
    Decent economy
Unsure of budget, just looking for options at this stage.
Looking for a 13 reg also.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

...and where do you put the petrol in that, exactly............ ???;)

Prius naturally springs to mind, or, shorter, the Auris - I had the loan of one for 2 weeks: have a read about it here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=82907263

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Yards hybrid, although at 5k a year, even a TVR wouldn't be out of the question

    Don't they? I don't know - I presumed they would.

Definitely going to see if we can test drive a yaris hybrid. Might struggle to get the them on board with the leaf, but it would make a lot of sense

Does the Polo come with DSG? Didn't see it on their site, but the VW site is pants. If it does i presume its the 1.2 TSI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Think it comes with the 85hp 1.4 petrol comfortline
    €19k plus charges

Price gone up since last year so

Wouldn't touch that 1.4 with a barge poll tbh!

Skoda Fabia 1.2tsi DSG, preferably the Monte Carlo edition. I believe this one is not the 60bhp mentioned, possibly the 85bhp version as opposed to the 105bhp.

Ah they're not that bad! Black and red would make me vomit but ti could be toned down a bit and is a lot cheaper than the equivalent Polo.

Would you make Alans mum drive one?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The up! Has a stupid automated ASG manual box though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

Me and my dad actually suggested the 1.2TSI Fabia, but after showing her, even the best looking model, its simply not happening!

The Up, Mii and the likes are just too small i reckon. She would like a class up from them. I think she's thinking anywhere from fiesta to focus size. But i reckon we're more in the fiesta range.

What's the story with the new Ibiza? Available in 1.2TSI with DSG? Showed her that and she quite liked it.

Jazz is definitely on the cards also, the Swift is getting on a bit, what's the auto box in them like? And i presume its the 1.5?

No idea what the autos are like in small cars, DSG aside I'd say they are pretty basic and most might be CVT rather than out and out slush box. Swift I linked to is 1.2 litre apparently and that model was revamped in 2010 afaik even though it looks very similar to the previous model. Jazz is a decent package but they are expensive for what you get.

Depends. If Alan could ask her to bake me a cake and I will decide after that.

    :P

Yaris hybrid interests me. Wonder what the auto box is like in them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Same idea as the Prius, a bit screamy on hard accelleration but absolutely fine. I think its the ideal automatic city car once you can justify spending that much money on a car.
That said, its only a few hundred more than the polo 1.4, the standard model is actually cheaper, and to be fair, even the standard model has dual climate, bluetooth, leather wheel, iPod integration, reversing camera, and the luxury model has cruise, keyless start. Half leather, fogs and alloys for €1k extra

    3 years free servicing too.

Just looking at the toyota site, and configuring the non hybrid Yaris with an auto box and it comes to the same price as the hybrid, something wrong there!

The Jazz comes to 19665 ex works with the auto box in SE guise.

Even the Ibiza with pretty sparse spec seems to come to 18500 with 1.2 TSI autobox.

€6290 for a Navigation pack on a Prius?

    €4000 for leather?

Dont forget the 1.33 MMT doesn't have AC, Its a weird situation where the higher spec model is cheaper, partly due to the lower VRT of the Hybrid.

As colm said they have a CVT box which some dislike. People sometimes call it droney due to the constant engine noise as there is no stepping through gear ratio's, it maintains a near constant rev under acceleration. The upside to this is the fact its silky smooth.

Yeah Ibiza 5Dr Style is available with the 105bhp 1.2TSI and DSG for a little over €18k

Sounds like a good deal. Ford do a 1.6 Auto Fiesta but I think its over 20k

So thanks to knifey_spoonie i got to test drive the hybrid Yaris in luxury spec today. Have to say both myself and the mammy and daddy were very impressed. The interior finish was surprisingly good. Liked the half leather seats. Wasn't sure about some of the interior trim, but that's just me being picky tbh.

As for driving it. Its odd. Around town, if it weren't for the display on the dash telling you, you'd never notice when the petrol motor actually starts up. Was very impressed with how seamless it was. All very quiet inside, which was surprising on such a small car. I got to drive up the motorway for a bit, which is a bit outside the cars comfort zone, but it was grand. Took a while to get up to speed, and that drone that was mentioned evident when you have your boot stuck in it. But once there it was well planted and comfortable.

I was impressed, the dad was impressed and so was the mammy. All in all, a cool and interesting motor that fits the bill.

    Oh, right.

I thought it was the 1.8 thats in the Auris but then thought a 1.8 is quite big for a Yaris.
