Laptop broken screen

My friend has a laptop with a broken screen,(cracked and not working at all) it still boots up though. If I use the vga connection to the tv with same, will it work ok? Will it fill the screen ( a 32" Sony Bravia).
Also, if I remove the laptop screen will it still function or does it need some re-wiring to work without it. Seems a shame for it to be sitting idle when maybe it can be put back into service for the price of a vga cable.
Plan is to hide it behind the tv and use a wireless keyboard/mouse to control it and tv as monitor with some stereo leads from the headphone jack to the tv.

It might fill the screen only one way to find out.If you remove the screen and its covers you will do away with the wireless aerial(wireless internet).Perhaps the way to go is,vga to tv,them set the power options to do nothing when the laptop is closed and off you go.

Replacing a laptop screen is cheaper (look on eBay) and easier than you'd think. It's usually possible to track down a service manual or a guide on YouTube.

Not necessarily, I took the screen of an old Acer Aspire to use under my 42inch TV and I still have WIFI - now, the distance between the laptop and the router can be no more than a few feet, but that's ok because the router is quite close to the TV (close enough that I can run a cable, but nevertheless, WIFI is still an option)

What is the model of the laptop?
I bought the screen for an acer online for about 50€.

When taking the laptop screen apart the antennae (for the want of a better word) is a wire running around the edge of the case and connected to two metallic things at the top of the case, if you leave that wire intact the wireless should suffer from no reduction in signal, think back to using a clothes hangar as an antennae for the tv and you wouldn't be far off.

I used Fixiy.ie for a laptop screen replacement lately. They seem to have screen replacement kits for most laptops. It was my first time doing it and it was easy enough. The kit comes with the screen, tools and instruction guide – they also have Youtube instruction videos. Go to the website www.fixiy.ie and type your model number in the search bar.

Tbh, their prices are just silly (€100-€110 for a screen that you'd have to fit yourself). For in or around the same money (plus €20 or so) you could have the screen fitted by a professional.

It must depend on the screen, I bought this screen for my Dell Laptop http://fixiy.ie/laptop-screen-dell-inspiron-n5010-15-6.html, it cost €78 delivered. They do fit them also for an extra €20, but I'd have been without my laptop for a day or 2. The cheapest price I could find elsewhere for a someone to replace it was €120 for the same screen. My friend (who told me about them) also recently got a screen for his Acer netbook for €55 from them.

Not sure if this should be a new thread, I also have a dodgy laptop screen but it's not cracked like excollier's, when I'm using the laptop and move the screen/lid, the screen goes black. Usually what works is closing the lid and open it again, may have to do this several times over until it's working again. Anyone any idea what the problem is, I wonder would it be some lose wire or something?

That's very good value alright, they're making more money on the screen than on the fitting :pac:

Try booting it in safe mode to see if you have the same problem. If you can't replicate the problem in safe mode you're looking at the video card being on the way out. If you can replicate the problem in safe mode you're probably looking at a wiring issue.

Sounds like either a loose cable or the inverter needs replacing.
