Motor tax is based on Co2 tax bands if the car was originally registered from Jan 2008 or newer. If the car was originally registered before Jan 2008 then motor tax will be based on engine size. VRT will be based on Co2 band irrespective of first registration date.

Thanks Bazz...i have it in my head that irish cars changed to the co2 system in june 2008 though? Does it make a difference?

Original Irish cars registered between 1st Jan 2008 and 30th June 2008 had the choice of going on either system, which ever was the cheaper at the time. Imports don't have that choice.
